Dissension in the Ranks What happens after the card resolves?

Asked by colton90 8 years ago

If a blocking creature is still alive after the card resolves, does it still assign damage to the creature it is blocking? If so, is the damage assigned now reduced after the Dissension in the Ranks has resolved? Or does it assign damage like normal? For instance, if I blocked with a 3/3 and a 2/2, when Dissension in the Ranks resolves, the 2/2 would be destroyed, and the 3/3 would go down to a 1/1 and live. If it still assigns blocking damage, is it only allowed to use the 1/1 left over after the fight, or is that a separate deal and it can still block with 3/3?

Fighting is defined as "these creatures each deal damage equal to their power to each other". Nothing more, nothing less. It has nothing to do with combat damage whatsoever. It also does not reduce the amount of combat damage a creature will deal.

When the 3/3 and 2/2 fight, the 2/2 will die and the 3/3 will have 2 damage marked on it.

Then combat damage will be dealt to all attacking/blocking creatures. Your 3/3 only needs 1 more point of damage on it to kill it since it already has 2 damage marked.

Your 3/3 will block as normal, and it will deal 3 damage to the creature(s) it blocked.

Note that even though your blocking 2/2 died prior to combat damage, the creature it blocked is still considered a blocked creature and will deal no combat damage to you unless it has trample.

The key idea here is that damage does not reduce power or toughness. Damage is simply marked on the creature until the end of turn.
