Destroy vs Regeneration

my friend say regen only works with damage, and i say its any destroy effect. which one of us it right?

Regeneration replaced any destruction event, including destruction due to lethal damage. Cards like Crimson Muckwader , which still have the full reminder text of regenerate, clarify this fact.

Basically when you pay a regeneration cost it creates a shield around the creature, and when a destroy effect or damage is dealt to the creature, it instead destroys the shield and the creature is unharmed. However, in order for this to work you have to activate it BEFORE the damage/destroy effect takes place, otherwise the shield won't go up cause the creature already died.

If a creature is successfully regenerated, it is removed from combat and gets tapped. It's only removed from combat if you are in the combat phase though.
