Descent into Madness and Protection from Black

Asked by DaggerV 12 years ago

How does this interact with each other? Say my permanents have protection from black, so I'm stuck discarding my hand, when none are left, would that force DiM to go too? Or does protection do nothing with this card?

Protection from Black does not protect them from being exiled by Descent into Madness as Descent into Madness does not target.

In Magic, protection is derived easily from the word DEBT:

D - Damage dealt to such permanent is prevented

E - Enchantments and Equipments cannot be put on such permanent

B - Blocking of a creature with protection is not possible for creatures of the stated quality

T - Such permanent cannot be the Target of spells and abilities of stated quality

However, as Descent into Madness does not use the specific word "target", you can choose to exile your permanents that have protection from black amongst other valid options.

Just a note that Descent into Madness is a valid choice for its own exile ability.
