Crewing vehicles after declaring blocks

Asked by polydeuces17 8 years ago

I am curious, since my friend just said to me that this works, if it actually works. A creature attacks, the defending player declares a blocker with his creature, then taps that creature to crew a vehicle and then blocks with that vehicle. It seems to me like it wouldn't work but I have no clue. Help please.

It won't work.

At the beginning of the Declare Blockers Step, as a turn-based action, the defending player may declare blocking creatures for all attacking creatures. Then there's a round of priority.

Since creatures aren't tapped when blocking, you may tap a creature that has been declared as a blocker to pay for the Crew cost, resulting in that artifact becoming a creature. However, at this point, the time to declare blockers has already passed, and you won't be able to block with that creature.

You may crew the vehicle before the Declare Blockers Step, which means you could block with the vehicle, but not with the creatures used to crew it.

During the declare blockers phase, you can't activate or trigger abilities, so he can't crew vehicles between starting and finishing declaring blockers. Do you need the quote from the rule book for him?
