Combat and Instants
Asked by Drakrhal 12 years ago
So, I went to my local store to play and I am very casual so the order of events in combat sometimes gets me. But what got me was how everything was declared and when they said they could play instants. Correct if I am wrong but this is what happened...
Player declares they are attacking(Time for Instants)Player then taps the creatures they intend to attack with.(Time for Instants)I declare I am blocking(Time for Instants)I assign my blockers(Time for instants)Combat damage is dealt
This seems really off to me for some reason and I can't find a real clear cut answer to the actual steps.
Also, is there time after the combat to do things before second main?

Hi, the combat phase consists of five steps.
Beginning of Combat (combat phase begins, "at the beginning of combat" abilities trigger, time for spells and activated abilities)
Declare Attackers (active player declares attackers, "whenever attacks" abilities trigger, time for spells and activated abilities)
Declare Blockers (defending player declares blockers and how they block, "whenever blocks" abilities trigger, time for spells and activated abilities)
Combat Damage (combat damage is dealt, "whenever deals combat damage" and similar abilities trigger, time for spells and activated abilities)
End of Combat (combat phase is about to end, "at end of combat" abilities trigger, time for spells and activated abilities) this is actually the time you've been asking about in your last question.
I hope my answer helps you.

With Absinthman's response, he is right, but sometimes there is a minor change:
4a. First Strike Combat Damage (Creatures with First Strike and Double Strike deal damage in this step. State Based actions will occur before proceeding, and I believe you gain priority to cast spells before proceeding to....)4b. Normal Combat Damage (Creatures with Double Strike and all other creatures deal damage in this step. State based actions occur, and players gain priority before proceeding to End Of Combat)

You are correct with your listing of the steps, and yes, there are more steps in which you could cast instants before the second main phase (they are the Combat Damage Step and the End of Combat Step). However, these steps are rarely used.
