Color Identity

Asked by NobodyPicksBulbasaur 12 years ago

Do basic lands have a color identity? I know that they are colorless, and that they aren't spells, but color identity and color are different things.

Does the fact that a Mountain has an implied text of "(t), add R to your mana pool" make it a card with a red color identity for Commander deck purposes?

(I also know that if you tap a land for an illegal color in a Commander game that it produces colorless mana instead)

"Lands whose type includes swamp, island, plains, forest and/or mountain (e.g.: basic lands, shocklands, dual lands, Shadowmoor special-basics, etc) DO contain the corresponding mana symbol(s) as per CR 305.6. As such, while they are "colourless" they do have a colour identity and may not appear in a deck unless the Commander is of the appropriate identity."

Official EDH rules. So they do have the "Identity" of the color they produce.

Pretty much, If you see a mana symbol anywhere that doesn't match your commander, It doesn't belong. The colorless production is for lands that produce any color and taking control of other lands that aren't yours.

The only lands that can work without having the perfect colors are the fetches as they have no mana symbols in them. A W/U fetch can be used in a U EDH deck, for example.

thought i might chip in here:

on magiccards.info you can search by color identity

Here is the page for the search term "ci:ur t:land", which means 'color identity of a blue red commander deck, type: land'

http://magiccards.info/query?q=t%3Aland+ci%3Aur&v=card&s=cname

this gives you a list of every land you can legally play in a blue red commander deck.
