Asked by RKingF 11 years ago
If I lose a game and later find out that the other player was cheating (casting a sorcery during my turn) can if I realize it later can I report it and disqualify the other player?

I meant to say IPG, not MTR in the first paragraph of my answer.

First,it's important to point out that playing a card with the incorrect timing is not necessarily cheating. In most cases this would go no further than a Game Rule Violation if caught while the game is still in progress and they would receive a warning. Now, if your opponent was to do something they weren't supposed to do to gain an advantage and hope to get one over on you, then that would be considered cheating, but that would only be after an investigation was done and it was shown that that was their intent. Cheating is a very serious and specific category of the MTR and people usually think that any action that isn't legal is "cheating" and it is not.
So, IF your opponent played a card with the incorrect timing and they did not do it with the purpose of gaining an advantage (cheating) and you don't realize it until after the game is over, then nothing is done and they won't even receive a penalty. This is because once a game is finished and you have scooped up your cards, the game is considered over. Judges don't retro actively go back and hand out penalties once a game is over, unless the action would require a disqualification. The judge will still talk to the other player, but as long as they determine they weren't trying to cheat then that is it.
On the flip side of things, if you were to notice your opponent playing incorrectly and didn't say anything and then later tried to use it to get them disqualified then YOU will be disqualified for cheating because at that time you are allowing an illegal game state to persist so that you can gain an advantage.
