Can you tap a creature just to tap it?
Asked by patrickolson 11 years ago
As I understand the rules, "tapping" is the side effect of an action correct?
Without any other cards in the discussion, you can't just tap a creature to tap it....it has to DO something.
Use Satyr Nyx-Smith as an example.
An opponent can't just tap this card, so they can untap it the next turn correct?
If possible, a rule section would be awesome. I can't find anything that talks about this.

Can't find a specific rule but by typing "mtg tapping for no reason," you can find several threads that will agree w/ what I've said.

There wouldn't be a specific rule for something that you -can't- do simply because there'd need to be millions of rules explaining all the things you can't do. Instead, the fact that there is no rule saying you CAN is all the needed proof for why you can't do that.
Things only tap when game effects state that they tap, and at no other time.

Thanks all. That's what I was trying to get to. When I mentioned "side effect" it was more of trying to describe something I didn't know how to describe.
That's how I play it, but my friend was trying to be clever.

No, tapping isn't a side effect. When you tap a creature, it's either part of the cost of an ability or you are attacking w/ it. You can't just tap it for no reason.
