Can you do Ajani, Caller of the Pride +1 if there are no creatures in play?

There were no creatures in play, can you still put him up 1 loyalty counter?

Always check the Gatherer rulings before asking a question.
7/1/2012: You can activate the first ability without a target. You'll still put one loyalty counter on Ajani when you activate the ability.

As an interesting aside, they've gone out of their way to do this after the first few planeswalkers, just to make it so that you can -always- activate the "small plus" ability of a PW if it has one.

Part of the dev team's philosophy on planeswalkers is that they should be able to function in most board states. They don't want a planeswalker to be useless without condition Y.

Yes, you can. The ability states that you can put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature, meaning that you don't have to put counters on anything if you don't want to.
