Can a creature extort itself?

Asked by hassankachal 11 years ago

I was playing against my friend and on my third turn I summoned a Tithe Drinker and hade one mana left over. I used the mana to extort the tithe drinker and my frined called me on it and said it was illegal, so could someone answer this?

Abilities of permanent cards only function while they are on the battlefield unless otherwise stated (like how Tymaret, the Murder King 's second ability only functions in the graveyard). Extort will only trigger if the permanent with extort is on the battlefield. You can't extort an extorter with its own extort.

Extort is triggered whenever you cast a spell. The creature being cast that has extort has not yet resolved, and therefore not on the battlefield. Because it is not on the battlefield, the ability won't trigger, and you can't pay for extort..
