Boros Reckoner and Blood artist trigger question

Asked by Rundy 12 years ago

Soooo let me set up the scenario.

Player A. Has 1 Boros Reckoner a Restoration angel and an Auger of bolas

Player B. Has 4 Lingering soul tokens and a Blood artist.

Player A. Swings in for game, but Player B. triple blocks Boros Reckoner with 3 of his Lingering soul tokens chumps the Resto with the last remaining soul token and chumps the Auger with the Blood artist.

My question is who's triggers would go off first the Blood artists triggers or the Boros Reckoner from the 3 damage he had taken?

Both get put on the stack in APNAP order, meaning player B's blood artist's ability would resolve first, then the Boros Reckoner's ability would resolve.

In this particular case, while it works the way PotatoPi suggests, it's not because of APNAP, as they aren't actually going on the stack at the same time.

As part of how the combat damage step functions, the following happens:

510.2. Second, all combat damage that's been assigned is dealt simultaneously.

510.3. Third, any abilities that triggered on damage being assigned or dealt go on the stack.

510.4. Fourth, the active player gets priority. Players may cast spells and activate abilities.

So the Boros Reckoner's ability is actually triggered in 510.3, which puts his ability on the stack, then before 510.4 happens and assigns priority, state-based actions are checked, which move all the creatures that have now been dealt lethal damage into the graveyard, causing Blood Artist's triggers to go on the stack above the Reckoner.

So Blood Artist does resolve first, and Reckoner second, but it's not entirely an APNAP thing, which is what -would- be the case is both players had reckoners, or both players had blood artists.
