Blocking with multiple creatures
Asked by dunn086 12 years ago
Here's a scenario:I am attacking with a 4/1 creature, and my opponent blocks me with TWO of his 4/1 creatures, what happens next? Does both me and my opponent's creatures dies? I know it's a very unlikely situation but it actually happened.
I have checked around the internet, a lot says that the blocked creature can assign it's damage to the blocking creatures, thus both of the blocking creatures will die(in my scenario), but some says that the blocked creature will deal all it's combat damage to one first, and the first blocking creature deals it's damage back to my blocked creature, and proceed with the second blocking creature if my blocked creature survives, which means in my scenario, my attacking creature dies along with only 1 of my opponent's creature and his 2nd creature survives.
Please help me out here, I'm so confused!!

As a note, the only times combat damage is ever dealt once, then dealt again are those involving first strike or double strike. When a creature with either ability is involved in combat, two combat damage steps are created. A first striker will deal all of its combat damage in the first combat damage step, and a double striker will deal all of its combat damage in both the first and second combat damage steps (so it deals a total of twice its power in damage).

Creatures deal combat damage equal to their power. If one creature is blocked by or is blocking multiple other creatures, you determine the damage assignment order for those creatures. This means your single creature may divide its combat damage among the creatures it's blocked by or is blocking, but you must assign lethal damage to the first one before you can progress to the next one.
Note that although the damage assignment happens in a progressive order, damage is still dealt simultaneously. You will end up assigning at least 1 and at most 4 damage to the first 4/1 (you assign as much as you choose); the rest will be dealt to the second 4/1. If you split the damage, all creatures in this scenario will die.
