Are Characters and Schemes EDH legal??

Asked by Stargreen99 9 years ago

I've been looking around while building two EDH decks (Riku and Prossh) and I've seen Schemes and Characters that would fit in awesome in either deck, along with others I currently own. Are they valid and playable, and if so, how do I use Schemes/Characters? I've read the ruling for Characters, but what about multiple characters?

The list of EDH/Commander legal cards are based on the Vintage list. Special cards like Schemes, Vanguards (this is what you mean by Characters?), and Planes are meant for specific game variants, and are only used in those specific variants. They aren't normally included in a standard EDH/Commander deck.

Normally in Vanguard, you only get one Vanguard card. It has a status similar to the Commander; a unique card that represents the character you are playing. I don't think they've printed them in a long time though? They didn't make much impact in real life.

You can play variants of EDH/Commander that use these. They aren't part of the standard rules, however. I have played "Planechase Commander" for example.

Thank you for your help.

And I did notice while trying to find the ruling that they're called Vanguards.

If you really want a game to last 8 hours, play a 6 player Planeschase, Vanguard, 2-headed archenemy game. Lol.

:O I now have a new goal. That actually sounds fantasticly complicated and costly in the time spectrum. Amazing idea.

It was ridiculously fun. We all started at 8 in the morning and stopped at around 3 or 4. If you have an iPhone, there are apps available for PlanesChase and Archenemy, called MTG Planeschase Proxy, and MTG Archenemy Proxy. As for Vanguard, I don't see an app anywhere for it, so you would have to get ahold of the actual cards.

Out of all of them though, planeschase is easily my favorite. I'd make every game I play a planeschase game if the other players were ok with it.

If I were you, I'd make proxies rather than try to find the original Vanguard cards. Only some of the Vanguard cards were actually printed. Many were specific to MTGO, where the format was much more popular.

I know where I could go to get the cards for it all. Haha. I use Card Kingdom to buy cards and they have all the Vanguard and Archenemy cards. But it does sound like I'll only need to get the Vanguard cards for it and use apps for the rest.
