Playing online

Online Magic forum

Is there a site that allows someone to play online, yet not have to pay? Like free-to-play so I don't have to add in stupid payment.

I've used both untap.in and Cockatrice. Untap is entirely web-based but the interface is a little less ascetic than Cockatrice. Cockatrice is a program you download and play. I'd recommend Cockatrice if you're playing with friends, but Untap if you just want some games against random people. My experience is that people are either really nice or really rude on Cockatrice, while they're mostly all nice on untap.

If you have any specific questions about either, I can try to help.

If you are interested in drafting, as fare as I know Magic Online (which is pay-to-play) is your only reasonable option. Although if you want to just simulate the draft process, you can do it on this very website!

If you are not interested in drafting, you should be because it's a lot of fun :)

If you want to play some constructed, you can download Cockatrice.

The upsides:

  • Cockatrice is completely free and allows you to build decks including any card (on MTGO you need to own digital copies of the cards)
  • Runs on Windows, Mac Os and Linux

The downsides:

  • There is no rules enforcement by the program. It just gives you a framework and it's up to you and your opponent to follow the rules. This can lead to awkward moments especially with unknown opponents.
  • I only use it for testing with other people in the same room, but my roommate uses it to play online a lot and according to him the skill level of your average cockatrice opponent is not terribly high.

You can download it here

Other similar programs are Magic Workstation and Apprentice but I haven't used either in forever so I can't say how portable they are or how skilled the average opponent is.

untap.in is the only strictly online one I can think of, if you're willing to download something, cockatrice is also there. Magic Online only if you want to spend money.

ducttapedeckbox You must not have met the same people as me on untap. "Nice" is not a word that comes to mind in many of my matches, mostly arrogant.

Huh, strange. I admit that I use Cockatrice much more, but the matches on untap generally were pleasant. I really didn't like the interface though, so I went back to Cockatrice as soon as it was back up.

I would recommend the tappedout Facebook group we have going. We all play on untap.in together and there are about 50 of us. Because we all know each other it's polite and easier. You can also always find someone who's willing to play a game. Hooray for Facebook groups! Hooray for communities of like minded people!

I can't link you to it now because I'm on my phone. If you go into the social forum on this site and click on any of the threads about a modern league you will find links in there.

Alternatively slovakattack, GlistenerAgent, or CommanderOfBolas can link you to it.

Come play on untap with us!
