Cube type thing?

Limited forum

I have never made a cube before, but I want to make something similar but for 2 players. What should I do, what should I keep in mind while building, and how many cards should I use to keep games fresh.

You could do a small singleton cube (180/4players) and just do 6pack constructed play like a pre release.

Sounds like a good idea but the problem is that I have never built anything like that before and I have no idea where to start.

The only cube I've personally made was a FRF draft cube as it's where I restarted MTG and I had a surplus of cards from drafting in those sets. I'd like to make another more personalized one myself, and I'd think you'd need to first decide on what archetypes you want for each color, then how they will overlap with other colors. Maybe Spootyone can add something to this, they have an article series on Cubes.

I think I would screw up overlapping colors, would an archetype for each guild work? That would also give me a clear build path. Also do things like cluestones count as colorless?

Maybe I could give each 2 color combination a number of slots and then add colorless for support cards.

Archetype ideas so far:

Rakdos - sacrifice or aggro

Dimir - surveil control

Simic - evolve

Gruul - stompy

Izzet - Spells

Azourious - control

Orzohv - __

Selesnya - tokens

Golgari - _

Boros - Aggro

You are apparently interested in my Cube. I designed it with the explicit intent of making a two-player Cube experience. I think it's very fun and successful and I encourage you to see what I've done so far. I've also had a chance to do normal drafting with it with a group of 5 or 6 and it's just great fun too. If you have any specific questions about it I'd love to answer them.

SMASHER101: Hey there. I can help point you in the right direction, but it's late here and I'm getting into bed so I will try to remember to respond to this in the morning. See ya then.

Alright SMASHER101, I'm back (albeit a bit later than anticipated).

First off, I want to suggest the Solely Singleton podcast in general since you are a person who has never cubed before. They're very entertaining.

More specifically, I want to suggest their episode about something called a cubelet. In this episode, they go into detail about a specific format called...you guessed it - Cubelet.

For more information about Cubelet, you should check out this site. The entire purpose of Cubelet was to create a format which would be close to cube but different so that it functioned well for 2 players. I have heard great things about it and have come close to making a couple myself. They are great for making specific archetype cubes and whatnot, too, because the entire cube is played every time.

If, however, you are settled on making a normal cube but are only going to have 2 people playing at any given time, you could build a small cube and utilize a different form of drafting before deck construction. Again, I want to point you towards the Solely Singleton Podcast, as they have an entire episode on all kinds of draft formats for cube, including a few that are good for smaller groups of drafters, such as Glimpse Draft.

Once you have decided what kind of cube you wish to begin building, I'd suggest taking yourself on over to the mtgcube subreddit, where you can ask questions to the wider audience of cube players on the internet about what you should play over what, misconceptions, and mistakes you may be likely to fall into. Additionally, you can join the cube discord channel, where myself and others hang out and discuss all sorts of things about the format.

I hope I've helped sufficiently enough for you to begin building your first cube :)
