I couldn't disagree with the sentiment more. Magic, more than any other game I've ever played/been involved in the community for, has a player base that ranges from quite young to very established older players. I simply couldn't count how many Magic players I know(myself included) that have girlfriends that play the game as well. Any one who says drivel like that, either has their world view warped or still subscribes to the classical nerd stereotype that has barely ever been true.
Magic is a game, played by an extremely diverse player base. Young, old, "hardcore", "casual", whatever. There is a reason Magic even has terms for how diverse it's audience is (Spike, Timmy, Johnny, Melvin and Vorthos).

Sounds like they are getting personal and using peer pressure. I see more and more of that these days and it is really annoying. I don't see why it should matter to someone else if you are enjoying a game with likeminded folks. I don't understand why people think everyone else needs to be as dirty as they are - like staying clean somehow threatens them in some way.

Yeah, no I disagree completely as well. I can't make the same arguments as some of you seeing as I'm 16, but I still think It's wrong. This game is incredibly complex and strategic in a way that "childish" kids could not understand. This game is for a younger audiance ranging to older players, there isn't an age max haha. Sidenote, I also am in a relationship and have been for over a year so that's also a thing. I'm slightly tired of the argument that all magic players are these unsocial people incapable of having a life.

I usually find that people like this, that unknowingly bash other people based on a very narrow point of view, are very insecure with themselves. If they have to try to take other people down to their level to get a kick, so be it, just know that you're the better person because you don't have to lower yourself to have fun or have any sense of self-worth.
As previously covered, Magic has one of the most diverse fanbases of pretty much anything that isn't on the television. Making a blanket statement like this without actually doing any research into it is just ignorant. Also, who cares if i'm childish? Growing up sucks, i'd much rather be a kid when I can.

So I've had this flat mate who didn't play Magic when he moved in and at first he was like "yeah I think I've made fun of people that played this back when I was in school, obviously I was one of the cool kids" (slight sarcasm included).
Then at some point he got interested and started learning it. He announced a few days after that Magic is the most awesome thing on the planet and thanked me countless times since then for teaching him how to play. :D

32 here.
Have a girlfriend who lives with me in NYC and occasionally plays. (Mostly to humor me but she does have her own deck and enjoys playing especially in groups.) Have a good paying job working for a well known company.
I played when I was a kid back in the 90s and picked it up again a couple of years ago.
All I can say is largely echoing the sentiments of those above...
Being an adult is doing what you want, and accepting the responsibilities that come with the consequences of being able to do what you want.
If you enjoy the game, its just another hobby. Perhaps a dorky hobby, but not much more dorky than playing Call of Duty for hours on end online.
If you do what you like, accept what comes with it, and cease giving fucks about what anyone else thinks about it...the universe tends to unfold the way it should.

I have a kid, I am 20 years old, a fun, well paying job, and I play magic when not working if possible. Yeah I probably spend too much money on magic but I am either with my son, or working, so getting away from life for a little while and having fun is better than sitting at home. Also I would rather play Magic instead of going out getting wasted Friday-Sunday.
April 28, 2014 11:27 a.m.
I do have a few problems with magic, but those are not that the fans are childish or single nerds. Quite the opposite, in fact. Most magic players in my book are cool guys who like an excuse to hang out and play a game.
The thing I'm not sure I like is the Pay-2-win thing. Everyone plays the new Mythics to win, which in turn MAKES them expensive in the aftermarket (supply and demand). Wizard doesn't get anything out of aftermarket sales, though, and I don't get anything out of it, either. Heck even the local card shops won't get much out of it because most of us order these expensive cards online, anyway.
Everyone loses. Why are we doing this, again?

What gnarlicide said sums it up very well... I'm 29, engaged and have worked full time at the largest law firm on the east coast for the past 5 years... have only been arrested once and that was when I wasnt playing mtg :p I know the type though, the ones that are "too cool", whatevs.. more cards for me :)

Ok, so I'm not really an adult (I'm 16) and I'm not in a relationship, and I receive my fair share of abuse for playing Magic, but I agree with everyone here. Magic is a way for me to spend my free time (and money) that isn't sitting in front of a screen for hours shooting people with imaginary bullets. I'd much rather have a sociable hobby which can exercise my brain rather than a mind numbing video game obsession that encourages you to stay indoors and have no friends. I honestly can't see myself giving up in the foreseeable future, and I don't give a shit what the 'cool kids' think of me. They have their stupid and immature opinion, and I have mine.

There are certainly Magic players who fit the stereotype -- indeed, they're the ones who define the stereotype -- but there are plenty of regular people who play the game.
I'm 21, graduating university in one month with a near-perfect GPA in my major, have two jobs offers to start the day after I graduate (both of which came out of my work here), working on publishing a research book, and living more comfortably than I could have asked. I currently do web security development for one of the Public Ivies. My best friend and girlfriend is devoted to me, and she plays the game as well.
When it comes down to it, Magic is actually, at the high level, a skill-intensive and thought-inducing game. Even outside of gameplay, designing, understanding, and trading are also thought experiments. Regardless of what level of gameplay you enjoy, it's about having fun in a comfortable environment.
Classic psychological theory says that those who bully or belittle others are subconsciously compensating for their own deficiencies.

Epochalyptik that would make sense one of them once got so angry he lost 15% brain function and control of parts of his body
April 28, 2014 1:01 p.m.
Epochalyptik - unfortunately that's not true. I can link to papers if you want but I'm sure you don't care. On average bullies tend to have higher self esteem than other groups of people.
April 28, 2014 1:04 p.m.
Epochalyptik says... #25
@ChiefBell: Self esteem is not necessarily the concern here. It's true that bullies often have high self esteem because their practices are usually designed to make themselves seem and feel superior to others. However, the motives for the bullying often stem from personal issues or deficiencies. For example, a bully who is confused or insecure about his sexual identity or preferences might engage in homophobic activity.
Regardless, the blanket statement made about Magic players is untrue.
Feel free to email me the links to those papers, though. I'm interested in reading them.

22 today, doing graduate studies next year, probably going to Korea or some other place to teach English until I can get another job in Canada. Been dating for 7 years and popping the question soon, once my finances are in order.
I wonder about Magic as childish. Schuesseled said it very well, and yet some times I feel that I use Magic to escape responsibility for longer than I should. That would only be a problem if I let my responsibilities slide, though.
I've never been the most amazing student, but I've still got an honours degree and more happiness than I could ask for, so I suppose those people you know barely scraping past jail ought to look for something that gives them happiness - apparently they haven't found it.

gnarlicide hit in on the bullseye for me as well. "Dude, I have a career, job security, a wife, two kids and a car payment. I do not know of any kids that are doing that right now. My wife tells me I am a nerd. Maybe this is part of some repressed childhood bullshit, I don't know. I am not a doctor. But I play in tournaments against one, I should ask him. The point is, I am 28 years old. I have been playing since 1995. Whenever I quit playing, the game would creep up in the most unlikely place. So I said to hell with it, I am going to keep on doing this. It doesn't make you childish. The point of being an "adult" is being comfortable with who you are. At least that's what I think."
Pretty much the same with me except I don't play in tournys(yet).

Why do they say we'll always be single? Is that really such a bad thing? You don't need to be married to be happy. And I feel like taking cheap shots at a large group of people based off of the ones you've met is more childish than playing a trading card game.
