Hey everybody! I have become quite interested in becoming a judge for magic. If not for a game store, I think it would still be nice to have the title and understanding when with my play group and at the schools club. Any tips and suggestions? Thank you!

One thing that helped with retention(for studying anything really) was studying in a 3 step progression then review once in this pattern:
1, 2, 3, review 1
2, 3, 4, review 2
3, 4, 5, review 3 etc.
Just do that through bits of the rule book at a time with mechanics/interactions/whatever. And find a good L2 to study under that is pretty user friendly. I almost said f-it bc one L2 I met was such a doucher

Practice and study. A lot. It takes a while and you have to be patient.

It helps if you know a judge who will help you out.
I was fortunate enough to have a judge offer free classes at the LGS to becoming a judge, I'm not sure I would have had the encouragement to study otherwise.

Hey sonicizslow, it's great that you want to become a judge! The first thing you should do is study the basic rulebook. You should also try to get in contact with either your regional coordinator and/or a local certified judge. Becoming a rules advisor is great too, and is often recommended before becoming an L1, but not required in all regions, or depending on the L2 who tests you, though I certainly would do it if I were you (I did).
You can take practice tests at Judge Center as well as find local judges. You can also participate in the judge forums at Judge Apps, where there is at least 1 weekly colum targeted usually at L1s working towards L2, but sometimes at L1 canidates.
If you need any help, drop me a line, and I can try and point you in the right direction.

Go to the judge website and study the crap out of the rule books. There are so many rules an interactions and specific wordings that you never would have thought of that you need to know and be able to explain out. I am about 3 months into studying for my L0 soon to take the test and I'm still blown away by the depth of the eternal formats.
Tl:dr study the hell out of the rules
