Hi. I've volunteered to organize a local Magic tournament for a club at my public library. While researching tournament structure and the scoring systems, I can across a conundrom. Here's what I found:
Appendix DTiebreaker Explanation
Match Points
Players earn 3 match points for each match win, 0 points for each match loss and 1 match point for each match ending in a draw. Players receiving byes are considered to have won the match.
A player's record is 620 (WinsLossesDraws). That player has 18 match points (63, 20, 0*1).
A player's record is 422. That player has 14 match points (43, 20, 2*1).
Game Points
Game points are similar to match points in that players earn 3 game points for each game they win and 1 point for each game that ends in a draw, and 0 points for any game lost. Unfinished games are considered draws. Unplayed games are worth 0 points.
A player wins a match 200, so she earns 6 game points and her opponent receives 0 game points from the match.
A player wins a match 210, so she earns 6 game points and her opponent earns 3 game points from the match.
A player wins a match 201, so he earns 7 game points and his opponent earns 1 game point from the match.
The way I interpret this, these are the exact same things. Can someone help clarify what I'm not seeing?

They are pretty much the same thing, but they are counted separately. Match points are more important.
Think of the Match Points as whole numbers, and the Game Points as decimal places.
The Game Points are just there to determine who did better, even if two or more players have the same match record.

Haha. I have all the information now. Thanks landgrafb. I now understand that Matches are the compilation of the two to three games players play. I was getting confused about if a "match" was a compilation of games, or vice versa.

The match points are for matches, meaning 3 games. If you won 2 out of the 3 games, you won the match and you get 3 match points. If you lost the match, but you won one game of it, then you get 3 game points and 0 match points. Make sense?

Ah, sorry, didn't read all the comments. Guess it was already taken care of :)

It makes sense to me now. On a different note, does anyone know the process to become an official tournament organizer?

If you plan on/want to sanction it, you will usually need a store associated with you (though I recently heard you can be set up to sanction them as an individual). Your best bet IMO is either to check out the wizards site as they have links and info for becoming a TO. Or to contact your regional coordinator. I can try to help more later, right now am on my phone at work

or you could just do a single elimintation bracket, and not swiss.

Swiss is much better for Magic. Bad match-ups happen way too much for that to be fair.

Somewhere on wizards website is a tourney organization program that keeps track of time, points, and tiebreakers. Makes things way easier.
Might want to look into that.
