Explanation of "The Rule of Fire"

"The Rule of Fire" is a term i've come across a number of times, and understand to be the principle that a card should be worth about 2 life in order to get burn value advantage from it. It can be used to roughly calculate damage leverage and establish an idea of tempo.
That all makes sense to me, but I would love a much more in depth explanation of its calculation and application; because the farther I move away from burn/aggro decks, the harder time I have using it as a conceptual marker for tempo. I'm at a level of play where i'm intuitively well aware (and in consideration of the meta) of what I should be doing at any point in the game, but being a math nerd, I'm interested in the numbers.
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good articles out there and could point me in the right direction?
Strangely, the Googles have failed me in this matter.
Cheers

A great collection of magic theory articles which also happens to contain the article in question can be found here
I'd recommend that anyone looking to better understand or improve their game read these articles.

@sylvannos Haha I'm glad somebody else is interested in them. And yeah, I noticed a couple key articles missing, but the breakdown and organization make it easier for newer players to find whatever they're looking for. Thanks for adding that other link btw
