Donating Magic cards (youth shelters, libraries, hospitals, etc)

In a Limited Resources podcast a while back (I forget now which one), Marshall mentioned donating old commons and uncommons to youth shelters.

I thought that was perhaps the coolest thing ever, and everyone I've talked to seems to agree.

Is there anyone out there who's actually done this (or maybe benefited from it)? If so, I'd love any suggestions / lessons-learned you may have!

Some specific questions:

  • Marshal mentioned it's better to donate just commons/uncommons/basic lands, as other cards can create tension. Think that's probably accurate?
  • Is it better (i.e., worth the time) to build real decks, or perfectly fine to just do loose cards? If decks, are there any favorite archetypes or tribes? Anything to avoid?
  • Is it worthwhile to include rule sheets? If so, could someone point me towards a one-pager?
  • Any tips for mobilizing other people (and LGSs) to help out?

Thanks tons!

My LGS will donate bulk to the children's section at the library. Getting young kids interested in MTG and giving them something productive (albeit relatively) is awesome, I'd recommend it.

Actually, this seems really interesting. My daughter is in a children's hospital at the moment, I should find out if they would take my bulk boxes. I would drop them off tomorrow if they would take them.

shadow63 - Thanks, but I was hoping for ideas on how to narrow it down a little. I'm in San Antonio and there's a BUNCH of different options. Guess I'll just check a couple at random. As an aside, 211.org is a great resource to find local social services.

EndStepTop and gnarlicide - Those are awesome ideas too! I love supporting our local library system and yeah, I suspect most children's hospitals could totally use something like Magic. I wouldn't have thought about those at all.

gnarlicide - Man, I hope everything works out well for your daughter!
