I was recently playing a large multiplayer game with friends for fun and someone played Omen machine. On my turn I play HellKite Overlord from my deck and immediatley after resolving someone uses go for the throat and kills it. In response I use soul's fire and deal 8 damage to him killing him (he was at 6 life). In the end though my Overlord still died. I thought that when a player dies their spells are removed from the stack, am I wrong? Should my overlord still be alive?

you are correct when your opponent lost they would be removed from game by SBA and any spells they had on the stack are removed with them.

800.4a When a player leaves a game all object owned by that player leave the game, all spells and abilities on the stack controlled by that player cease to exist and any effects which gave that player control of any objects or players end. This is not a state based action this happens as soon as the player leaves the game.
