I want to start a commander podcast

Commander (EDH) forum

Hello there! My name is Badger and I'm looking into starting a podcast to talk about the best format, but I have some concerns and I would like to reach out to the commander community to help me out here.

1) Does this already exist? I don't want a redundancy in the community, but all I know of is that

2) Would you listen to it? I don't mind a small audience, but if you feel like there would be no interest I'd like to hear your opinion.

3) Kickass name: at the moment I only have The Command Zone as a possible name, so I would love to hear suggestions!

Here's how I imagine an episode of the show would go down. 1- Introduction, three or four hosts discuss what they've done in magic briefly over the week (standard, commander, maybe some limited events)

2- Recent changes relevant to commander (upcoming spoilers of cards that seem relevant in commander)

3- If there are no changes, possibly crack-a-pack?

4- Commander spotlight, we have either a host bring a deck and discuss the general, some choices they made for it, and maybe some budget alternatives as commander is best as an easy entry format.

Any feedback is appreciated, and thanks for your time!

I don't think I'd listen to it, but if I were a podcast listening kind of guy I would consider it. I would do a deck/card/commander of the week/however-often-you-cast thing where you discuss either a build, a commander or just a really important/often used card. You could do other stuff some episodes, like do an intro to mana-bases, or a primer on color combos. Also, talking about spoilers is awesome, but that's only 4 months a year.

I agree about doing special kinds of shows, and I was just outlining the 'standard episode' I hadn't thought of doing the mana base/primers which sounds like a really cool idea actually. Talking about important cards would probably take entire episodes, but I would love to tackle that topic as well. Thanks!

Yeah, I meant do one thing each episode. One week you have a deck, next you have commander, next week you have a prevalent card, next week you have a special (like the mana base primer or building on a budget). It's very important to make a schedule and stick to it. All of the popular internet personalities/shows release on a very consistent basis. Make your podcast come out at 6pm every wednesday or something and more people will listen to it. Same goes for having the monthly schedule. "Oh yay! Rargonaut is doing a deck next week! I'm excited to see what crazy build he has in store for us!" is the kind of thing you're looking to invoke. Also, try making a few before you start releasing them. Having a buffer is always nice, and a podcast takes a while longer to edit than you think, especially if you have the fancy thing where it has the relevant links at the right times. You can make an exception to this for time sensitive stuff like spoilers or ban list changes, or you can append a section for them. Also, the more I think about think, the more I want to actually listen, though I doubt I'd be able to find the time to listen every week. I'd certainly contribute my decklists, with all the info you'd need to talk about them. Also, pretty much everything I said was arbitrary. You could do tuesdays, or every other week. I was just making an example. /rant

So each episode do either a deck tech, a general spotlight (similar to deck tech, but more about, broader strategies you can take with that general), power commander cards, and then say, the primer/budget/special episode. I agree having a rigid schedule will help out, and I'll have to mess with it but I do like the idea. It might end up being every other week, and I was planning on doing several episodes in advance before starting up the show. There's also some pre-show stuff I need to take care of (logo, name, making sure recording equipment works) and I need to find definite hosts, I know a lot of people with interesting decks who would be willing to talk every once in awhile, but I know some people I could get to help me with this on a more regular basis.

Yeah, I would go with one or two other regulars and one guest of the week/2 weeks. And while I can't commit to being a regular, I would be more than happy to be a special guest. I have lots of dumb EDH decks I like to show off.

I like your idea. I feel that this would be better at introducing newer players to the EDH format, and I have an article series that was designed to do that. I think that what could do would be much more informative than my little battles.

To address your points:

  1. Does it exist? Yes and no. I have an EDH article series called Tale of Two Commanders, but it's less informative about the format as a whole and more about individual games.

  2. Yeah, I'd be very willing to listen to it, and I'm sure many others would as well. Knowledge is power.

  3. I think The Command Zone is a badass name. Way better than anything I could come up with.

I'm with GoldGhost012, Command Zone is a cool name. Maybe we can come up with something better, but I can't think of anything right now. I'd head over to the MTGCommander forums and ask around there about potential viewership and such, as well as MTGSalvation.

As for point number 1, I think Tale of Two Commanders is very different from what we're talking about here, and shouldn't step on each other's toes too much.

I'll have to go to those sites and check to see if there's support, and I believe I've found enough support for possible regulars. I'll keep this updated but it's possible that if this takes off I could have episodes up by January. We'll record a few episodes and try to find a decent episode length.

let me know where i can listen your first podcast when its made. seems like a good idea. Maybe do a intro to commander episode, that way EDH noobs (like myself) can a grasp on things.

I would encourage you to pitch this idea to KrazyCaley for an article series.

He runs all the site's articles. Just describe what your idea is and if he would support it.

*and ask if he would support it.

How would the people talk and converse over a given topic?? Skype or something. Thats how some friends and I did some battling videos to advertise a site we were staff on a while back. We had the people talking another person in the Skype call recording. That being said, I think it's a pretty cool idea, and if it gets started I would probably listen in, or if possible contribute in some way.

I would also be interested in hosting your finished podcasts on my website MTGCasualPlay.com. My site is newer and I am always looking for writers that want to submit articles, videos, or podcasts.

I think the EDH world could use new podcasts... I always tune into the shows on CommanderCast.com, they always talk about Commander/EDH and are pretty good. iTunes and MTGCast.com are also good references for podcasts.

I'll have to get back to you after finding out if this is actually going to happen. I'm still working out who would be my regular cohosts, but likely I'll have more information next week.

The only thing that I know which is like your idea is www.commandercast.com. They do a podcast about the commander format and sometime even get famous guests from the format.
