I don't understand the purpose of this forum....

It looks like a place for Epoch to move questions that should be in the Q&A, because for some reason, he cant move things to the Q&A, which is odd.

For the lolz. Or for threads you want to post when suffering from an existential quandary filled with loathing and self-doubt.

Haha vampirelazarus, that made me laugh. I've been wanting to rant about life a lot lately too.

according to a thread that Epoch posted yesterday it is a place for all misplaced threads that were put in the wrong forum.

I don't know how effective this will be but it's hilarious.

It's a sort of dumping/holding ground for "lost" posts: rules questions that are outside of the Q&A and not directly relevant to another forum, "I made top 100 users" threads, etc.

Part of the problem is that I have no way to convert threads into questions, so I can't move all of the misplaced rules questions to where they actually belong. This forum is, at least in theory, supposed to help us keep the other forums cleaner and more on-topic.

I don't want this to become an off-topic forum; everything on TappedOut should still be Magic related in some way.

Why cant we have a general forum? I think it would be nice to have some form of connection to the real world, i mean, we are after all, a community. We could become closer with more connection outside of magic.

vampirelazarus- Realistically, that is what email and Facebook are for.

We do have a General forum, but it's Magic related.

I'm on the fence about a true off-topic or water cooler forum. In my experience, they tend to be risky for hobbyist communities; users tend to flame more and develop grudges because of off-topic discussions and views. I also don't want off-topic threads to appear on the home page because they'll push relevant threads out of the activity feed.

@the5ervant: To be fair, it's much easier for a community like ours to socialize here than on FB or other social media. I wouldn't mind contributing to reasonable and interesting off-topic discussions here, but I probably would mind giving out my FB profile and other social media info.

I was thinking more along the lines of meeting someone with similar interests here on T/O, then developing those relationships using media that are far better suited for it.

What did parole do before Facebook? We used forums. Facebook is for sharing things, this is a forum, for discussion. I do like the idea of having an off topic forum, but Epochalyptik did make some very good points...

If there was some way to code it so it didn't show up on the stream, and we had a "stay classy" policy, with a couple of moderators, would you be more inclined?

With enough experience on different forums, one gets to understand that the problem with general-topic forums is that the community will eventually walk into polarizing topics. Changing how the forum is coded, who makes posts, and who reads posts, can't solve a basic social problem.

Degenerate behavior on forums always starts with something really simple - something about the next elections, or some popular TV show, or something similarly abstract. Those discussions lead to long grudges because there can be no external basis for right or wrong in terms of most opinions and values.

As long as the conversation on Tapped Out is bound to Magic-related topics, we can avoid degeneracy because there are external foundations to our opinions. Our opinions about Magic-related topics are generally determined by the results of play, by the decisions coming from Wizards, by the market fluctuations, and by the psychological profiles.

Current is a future modern rotation pretty much. I think it will happen in 5 years or so. Femme is just getting ahead of the curve with it. Good to get people thinking about it now. Will lessen the blow later on.

Edit--

This will def become more popular over the next year or so as sets rotate, and people struggle to break into modern. Great for newer players.
