Deck Changes —May 25, 2013

I made the switch from Ib Halfheart to Krenko. Ib's ability is good and is overlooked in terms of abilities, but I felt the deck needed to up the pressure in terms of creature presence. With the change in general, I made some other changes.

The first change was to get rid of the Ring of Valkas. When I first saw the ring, I honestly thought it would be decent in a mono red deck that wanted to play aggressively. The haste and +1/+1 every upkeep looked enticing, but it usually ended up hanging around on the battlefield unequipped because I needed to cast a new threat each turn to maintain pressure on my opponent. What I needed was a card that I could cast and use repeatedly with no further mana commitment. Five Alarm Fire was just the card. It's reusable and only requires creatures scoring combat damage, which for a swarm of goblins is easy to do. I've used it as a finisher or as a way to get rid of troublesome blockers. When combined with Krenko, it gets nuts very quickly.

Mimic Vat was taken out to make room for Foundry Denizen. I figured with the butt load of tokens generated by Krenko, it was a better choice because it could be a beast on the field. Besides, that mana commitment was could be better spent on a new threat.

I added Rogue's passage for some of my meatier goblins (Foundry Denizen, Goblin Piledriver, a heavily equipped Goblin Gaveleer, Taurean Mauler) or my goblins that required combat damage to an opponent for effects (Skirk Comando, Goblin Lackey, Warren Instigator).

OUT: Ring of Valkas, Mimic Vat, Mountain

IN: Five Alarm Fire, Foundry Street Denizen, Rogue's Passage
