Top 8 in paid FNM —June 13, 2014

This weekend at the card shop I love to play magic at 35 people came out to do the paid FNM. I was surprised at this and of course was feeling pretty doubtful that I would make top 8. My friend and I were even Predicting who was going to destroy us in the rat race for booster packs. This was the outcome.

Round 1 - Dimir Mill (2-0) I've known this guy for a while now. He has been playing magic for a bit and usually has a really unique deck that he's playing. He had some pretty beefy creature's and he almost has me the 2nd round but I was gaining life left and right and I was able to kill him in a few turns when I killed his aberration.

Round 2 - Esper Control (0-2) This was one of the players my friend and I are always nervous to play when we see we are paired up with him. This time was no different than the other's. He swept me and it was not pretty at all. I just could not put up a fight. he got a set of D-Sphere's out on me and Elspeth just shut me down not having trample and all. But this guy is also a great player. for sure one of the best at the shop.

Round 3 - Mono Black Devotion W/red (2-0) This match up was actually with my best friend. The way that I won was simple. I just completely out ran him. He didn't hit any of his early game stuff and I was able to kill him by turn 4 or 5 both games.

Round 4 - Naya Aggro (2-1) I really liked this deck. With the recent rise in Naya aggro in my particular area I wasn't thrilled to be playing him though. He won the first game by being way faster than me. I won the other 2 by getting bigger creatures and Trampling him to death. All very good games.

Round 5 - Band Walkers (2-0) This was also a match up with one of my good friends. The first game He wasn't able to get out anything but an Elixir and I was moving so fast he just couldn't do anything. The 2nd game was really a great game of magic. We went back and forth but It really go interesting when I was able to do Garuuk's -7. I had everything I wanted to have out on the board. and in the end he couldn't block my 36/36 Mistcutter with trample.

My standing place in the tournament at this point was 4th place and I continued on into top 8.

Round 6 - White Weenies (0-2) This is a deck that I always have trouble with. I kept 2 very less than decent hands. I should have known better to not take risks at this point. I still feel like even If I was dealt a better hand this guy would have swept me. his deck was just to fast for me.

So overall i'm really happy about how this deck did It won me a booster pack and was super fun to play with.
