EDHREC Cast: Design Trends We Do Not Like

I saw this video, and I wished to discuss it, since I feel that the people in the video raise some excellent points.

First, I do like ward very much, but WotC has definitely been using it far too frequently since they introduced it, and I definitely agree that the new Voja is far too powerful; if he had cost 7 mana or not had ward, I would have had no problem, with him, but, as he currently is, he is simply far too powerful.

Second, I have no problem with newer keywords that are essentially "fixed" versions of older keywords, so I am not certain if I have anything else to say about that.

Third, I definitely agree that newer cards that render older cards entirely obsolete are very rarely a good thing, so I cannot help but feel that there has been a severe case of power creep in recent sets.

How does everyone else feel about this? Do you agree with the points that the people in that video made?

I agree he's a bit too powerful. However, I do not think he is off the curve considering power creep. Commander games tend to end quicker now, so a 5 CMC Commander is harder to pull off. I feel the ward was to try and protect the players investment.

I don't look forward to playing against him and paying 5 mana for a Doom Blade. However, he still dies to board wipes and subsequently he needs board presence to get the pay off, so he's especially susceptible to wipes.

I'd like to see more returning abilities. For example, Raid would have made sense on both Ixalan and Thunder Junction.

Monastery would have made sense of Ikoria and our return to Theros where it originated.

This adds cards to the pool of abilities, which makes building theme decks easier because we have more to work with.

Big time agree with Timmy if I am reading it correctly. I am tired out on so many New but functionally similar mechanics when reusing makes sense for so many reasons. Cognitive loading being a big one

I wish backup would get reused a bunch, it is fair and awesome. Guardian Scalelord is the best
