Xantcha: Instigation Agent

Commander / EDH BR (Rakdos) Curse Goad

Maybeboard

Xantcha is a Sleeper Agent with a propensity to instigate aggression.

The plan is to use goad effects to get your opponents attacking each other and to mop up afterward. Even if they’re not literally goaded, opponents are nudged to attacking others with Curses and your creatures with deathtouch or indestructibility. Xantcha’s (3) ability hopefully garners some good will (except with the person she’s deployed to.

You want to keep the heat off you while you bide time to deploy a win condition, most likely Wound Reflection and/or either Stuffy Doll or Brash Taunter combined with Blasphemous Act or Arcbond. You can also generate infinite mana with Basalt Monolith and Rings of Brighthearth and dump that all into Xantcha's ability.

The Gold Star victory is one using a card from your opponent’s deck, stolen with either Praetor’s Grasp (my pet commander card) or Opposition Agent (Agents work together!)

Finally, there’s also an intentional emphasis on story flavor with some of the cards from Xantcha’s past…or even from herself! Phyrexian Tower is visible in the background of Xantcha’s card art. Heartstone is literally her heart! No wonder it works perfectly in the deck. Xantcha is prominent in the art of Ill-Gotten Gains and Oppression.

So far, Xantcha has outperformed my expectations. I love this deck; how it plays and interacts. Even when I lose, I'm glad I got to do what I wanted (manipulate attacks away from me and play other player's cards).

High Performers: Reanimate, Arcbond, Agitator Ant, Master of Cruelties, Sudden Spoiling, Victory Chimes

These cards all fit the theme when I built it, but in playing, they really shine. Reanimate lets me play other's cards or even my own I've discarded with Key to the City. Arcbond and Sudden Spoiling make combat on other's turns very fun. Master of Cruelties gives a win-con that works perfectly with Goad. Agitator Ant works great with the Indestructible creatures. You'd be surprised how much Victory Chimes works just like Goad if you politic well.

Mid-performers, taking out for now: Ophiomancer, Treasure Nabber, Curse of Hospitality, Disrupt Decorum, Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor

These just aren't giving enough value for their card. Ophio doesn't block flyers or attack well. Treasure Nabber eats any removal. Curse of Hospitality is too unpredictable. And I keep drawing Disrupt Decorum too late. There's almost too much goad. It doesn't work well in multiples. Might put these back in later, but want to try out different cards.

Under performers: Magmaquake. Just literally didn't do what I though it did. oops.

I also need more Swamp-type lands for Cabal Coffers. I find I don't actually need the "save commander" lands. I also need more of my lands to give R/B mana, since I'm more often constrained on that than colorless, given the # of mana artifacts.

11 OUT: Command Beacon; Sanctum of Eternity; Forgotten Cave; Barren Moor; Ophiomancer; Treasure Nabber; Curse of Hospitality; Disrupt Decorum; Rakdos Charm; Varchild, Betrayer of Kjeldor; Toxic Deluge; Goblin Spymaster; Undying Evil

IN: 3x Swamp; Canyon Slough; Rolling Earthquake; Chain Reaction; Frenzied Fugue; Keen Duelist; Gonti, Lord of Luxury; Cut / Ribbons; Mob Rule; Black Market; Chef's Kiss

Bringing in more damage-based wraths to go with the Stuffy/Brash theme; they also hit flyers. Frenzied Fugue goes with the "kill them with their own stuff"-theme. Keen Duelist gives draw and more politics fun. Gonti does both card draw and "play their stuff." Cut // Ribbons and Mob Rule give more late-game straightforward win-cons. Black Market gives copious mana, esp. for Xantcha. Chef's Kiss is just for fun; maybe blowouts? definitely will make for some fun stories.
