Long overdue update —May 27, 2018

Just updated the list to reflect the current build

The meta of the deck might work well with Myth Realized. It doesn't do anything for your Awakened land synergy but it definitely plays nicely with all the instants and sorceries.

darleen Agreed. My only real concern with it is that if I play one of my many board wipes, it might get swept away, which is normally fine for most things, but would be sad if it had 25 counters and was ready to smash face... I'll definitely give it some thought though.

Right now I feel like I have a bunch of good ideas to add to a list that is pretty strong most of the time, so the challenge is prioritizing spells and balancing out into something optimal... Basically paring things down into 100 of the best cards.

illumfolly Using Proteus Staff, and then hunting for a big threat is a very interesting idea... I like the thought of snagging Sun Titan or Tidespout Tyrant immensely... Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre (or any other Eldrazi for that matter), is a solid NO due strictly to flavour reasons. Noyan is in a life or death battle against the Titans and it just doesn't make sense.

PocketBob, that's an interesting idea... Eye of the Storm seems rather chaotic though and although I could see it pumping up a land from nothing into an 18/18 threat in the blink of an eye (Eye of the Storm.. Eye... Get it?!? Lol), I'm really trying to out-draw and out-value my opponents, and think it could really work against me, especially if I had cast a Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile, or boardwipe. I'll keep it under consideration though in case I ever want to try a more chaotic build.

Thanks for the ideas to you both!

Ender666666 Have you ever play-tested online with Untap.in? If so, what's your username? If not, you should give it a try! It's a great, free-to-use, browser-based way to play MTG online. You can upload your decks directly from its URL.

I play on Untap.in regularly. I have three EDH decks, each a different style (the deck lists are on my profile). Leave a message on my profile's wall if you want to play test some time. I'm really curious to see how this deck plays. Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper is very interesting and flavorful.

darleen I'd love to sometime. I'll friend you on here, and enable chat, if you do too, we can chat and coordinate.

I haven't used that app, but would be willing to try.

may also want Frontline Medic, Perilous Vault (FLAVOR)

January 25, 2016 8 p.m. Edited.

Ender666666 says... #7

I'm going to look at Frontline Medic and see if I can't find a place in here for it.

ooh ooh ooh. Rite of Replication or clone effects + man lands / awakened lands = 5 new lands. Might be a fun thing to do, though not necessarily the most powerful thing to do.

Ender666666 says... #9

I'm pretty sure that won't work. The spells would copy the lands, but the copies would be 0/0 land creatures, with no +1/+1 counters on them, and would just die.

Ender666666 says... #10

If I had global pump effects in play, then it could work, but I don't run any.

February 2, 2016 3:01 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #11

no no no. doesn't copy the "awaken" ability. I checked!

February 2, 2016 4:30 p.m.

PocketBob says... #12

They would copy as a 0/0 land creature and die instantly. I use Godhead of Awe to get around this, not to mention the other creatures are probably weakened

February 2, 2016 6:25 p.m.

MaksWell42 says... #13

Rite of Replication would copy the card exactly, not any state it's in. So, the copy (copies) would enter simply as land(s).

February 3, 2016 6:17 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #14

yep, you'd just get the land. Imagine if it were the case that you got the land creature -- why not do it with Dark Depths and Mirror Gallery?

SomeDipshit says... #15

Maybe you want a Coercive Portal, or a Crush of Tentacles

February 3, 2016 7:13 p.m.

Ender666666 says... #16

I was JUST thinking about those cards last night!

February 3, 2016 7:20 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #17

Man Portal would be savage. It's usually savage, but with Awaken, and with the ability to respond to it popping? Crazy good here, would definitely recommend. The crush is a great card and fits well with any blue deck, really. I recently played with this deck and had a blast being able to cast a one sided wrath every turn. I reliably won by tutoring Inkmoth Nexus and pumping it up to a Blightsteel Colossus with Darksteel Garrison. I even got to counter down a Strip Mine with Teferi's Response. It was unreal.

You tested my deck out? Was it only or in paper? Please feel free to expand on your thoughts.

February 3, 2016 7:55 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #19

Just online. I might buy it on paper though it's a lot of fun, and I do have a lot of the pricey cards already for Talrand, Sky Summoner.

This is definitely not a tier 1 deck, but it does really well against other tier 2 - tier 3 decks. It completely shrecks any permanent based strategy, as is generally the case with spell slinging. It's particularly resilient against mass land destruction strategies like Titania, Protector of Argoth.

Buckles hard to stax and prison, but that's expected. Got plundered by aggressive control shells (Damia, Sage of Stone and Sen Triplets). Damia would just bounce the lands and Noyan Dar all day. Sen Triplets cast all of my cantrips.

Specific thoughts:

Inexorable Tide was a complete dead draw for me. Maybe I am just playing it differently than you, but I always piled counters onto one land rather than onto multiple lands, so the proliferate was not helpful in the two instances that I did play it -- +3 per spell was plenty.

Planar Outburst and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon were immensely satisfying, more of that.

I would probably swap Akroma's Memorial for Eldrazi Monument. The former is good all around, but the latter incentivizes awakening lots of lands and beating face with them.

illumfolly Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I'm glad you're having fun with the list like I am.

I am not surprised that it's not a Tier 1 deck... I think it would be hard for a deck using the strategy to be Tier 1 really, based simply on what it's trying to do. Tat said, I am glad you think it is strong. I'm aiming to make it as good as I can.

Planar Outburst and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon are very fun, I can't disagree. I too have been underwhelmed with Inexorable Tide and do plan to swap it out... Proliferate in general was a subtheme that I had originally planned to use a lot of, but found it to not really have the impact I had hoped for.

Someone had suggested using Proteus Staff + Tidespout Tyrant to turn an animated land into that fatty, or any of my other value creatures. I am going to test that in case it can up the threat level here.

Finally, regarding Akroma's Memorial, I have been planning to cut it now that I have more ways to give my dudes evasion. I cannot deny that Eldrazi Monument is very strong, but I simply cannot include it. It would be a major flavour fail, since Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper is an Ally, and staunch opponent of the Eldrazi. It just wouldn't make any sense to use anything Eldrazi in here, since he wants to obliterate them. So even though it's a great card mechanically, I just can't include it for flavour reasons.

What do people think about Narset Transcendent vs. Venser, the Sojourner in this deck?

February 4, 2016 12:24 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #22

Someone

haha that was me -- because I use that in Talrand

On Eldrazi Monument -- okay, then Akroma's Memorial is a good spot to cut, alongside Inexorable Tide -- use these two spots for Tidespout Tyrant and Proteus Staff. May even want to add Polymorph and Mass Polymorph

February 4, 2016 12:27 p.m.

SomeDipshit says... #23

Stick with Narset -- synergizes. venser is just a good card without adding much -- unless you wanted to add bouncing effects

Always remember that you can never have too much Angel of Serenity in a deck as well

February 4, 2016 12:29 p.m.

Ender666666 says... #25

Perhaps. Would need an angel though.. Got a spare foil one to toss me? ;)
