This Affordable Modern Affinity Deck is secretly an aggro graveyard deck that can pivot into a burn deck to keep your opponent on their toes.

This is usually the play pattern you should more or less follow on round 1:

  • Play as many artifacts to make Emry, Lurker of the Loch be playable on turn 1, however do not use her for attacking, your other creatures are better for that. If Emry is not getting removed you can play other copies of her to fill the graveyard with more artifacts that you will be able to bring back and help make Slag Fiend bigger. You cannot Cast Artifact Lands from the Graveyard so be aware when choosing what to target with Emry's Activated Ability.

  • Use Mishra's Bauble as recurring card draw engine with Emry that also gives you information on your opponent's next draw. Ideally sacrifice it after your opponents untap step and before they actually draw at the beginning of their turn. This way the card you draw from the Bauble is given to you on their end step so it cannot be taken away from any discard spells your opponent might have.

  • Use the affinity mechanic to get Frogmite and Sojourner's Companion quickly. Be agressive and use Emry to keep bringing back any creatures that die.

  • Use Thoughtcast and Thought Monitor to keep your hand full. Thoughtcast is a better card to bring back to your hand with Emry due to its Enter the Battlefield trigger.

  • If your graveyard is getting full of artifacts its time to bring in Slag Fiend to push to the finish. Arcbound Ravager is also there to fill the graveyard and help close the game by either becoming large and dealing the damage or putting its counters on an Ornithopter or Thought Monitor ideally to finish the game in the air. When trying to finish your opponent you can also sacrifice your artifact lands to Ravager to get that explosive extra damage.

  • If your artifacts are being targeted by removal you can sacrifice them before hand to Ravager. If they where going to be destroyed best to turn them into counters. if Arcbound Ravager is the one getting removed best to place those counters on a flying artifact creature if you can.

On the Second Round expect Graveyard Hate and Artifact Hate. So switch out the Emrys, Slag Fiends and bring Metallic Rebuke, Galvanic Blast and Ghirapur AEther Grid to turn the deck from an Artifact Graveyard deck to an Artifact Burn Deck. Prioritize the Metallic Rebukes not just for removal but for Karn, the Great Creator, Collector Ouphe the occasional Stony Silence as they can shut down most of the deck. However not all is lost, Ghirapur AEther Grid should still allow you to push the extra damage you need to close the game.

If there is a Tie Beaker bring what seems most appropriate depending on the match up. Good Luck and have fun!

Affinity has changed a lot over the years and this is only one iteration of many so feel free to play whatever variant you prefer. In the Maybeboard you will find some suggestions of other cards that may help you make your own variant if you wish.
