Evolution of this Deck Show

This deck was based on an old colorless Legacy Tron deck I had made back in the late 90s early 2000s, before Tron, Eldrazi, or Planeswalkers were even a thing! It used Cloudpost, Glimmerpost,Vesuva and Urza lands, as well as Metalworker and Staff of Domination, all to ramp into and assemble Darksteel Forge, Mycosynth Lattice, and Nevinyrral's Disk. There was a Karn, Silver Golem or two in there also.

But when I started playing EDH, I transformed into my second EDH deck, with Karn, Silver Golem as the Commander. This first version of the deck was very similar to my old Legacy deck, and was primarily concerned with infinite mana combos using cards like Metalworker, Staff of Domination, Basalt Monolith, and Voltaic Construct,combined with Karn to do untap shenanigans. There were also a lot of high-mana value artifacts to turn into creatures with Karn.

When Oath of the Gatewatch was released, I replaced Karn with Kozilek, the Great Distortion to help address card draw issues, and I also liked Kozilek's counterspell ability. Karn remained in the deck at first, as not much else changed for a while. Eventually though, I ended up taking Karn out, as I replaced many of the more expensive artifacts, and other Karn related cards, in favor of more cheap mana rocks to cast Kozilek earlier. Ultimately though, I felt that Kozilek was not quite strong enough as a commander, as his abilities were too conditional, and sometimes flopped or were irrelevant, like having too many cards in my hand like all lands, or not having the right cards to counterspell anyways... Kozilek was more versatile and resilient than Karn, but I still longed for a really strong colorless commander...

Then, Eldrich moon was released, and in Emrakul, the Promised End I saw the power of Mindslaver in the command zone.

Now, for an Eldrazi tribal deck, there's not actuall very many Eldrazi in here... I still consider it an Eldrazi deck though. The commander is Eldrazi. There are 3 out of 4 Tribal Eldrazi cards in here, pretty good for tribal. There are cards that reduce the cost of Eldrazi specifically. And even though the deck is designed to win with artifact combos, the other way it wins is just smashing face with huge Eldrazi. It has Rise of the Eldrazi in it, including the 3 titans themselves, the most important Eldrazi (and Voidwinnower, the 4th most important Eldrazi). There is 1 card with annihilator.
Also, even though there is a bunch of ramp, and a high land count, it's still important to be selective and conservative with really high costing cards, they're terrible to draw too early... There's actually a lot of tutoring in the deck also, so it can pretty consistently get out the best Eldrazi anyways. In that sense, Planar Portal and Eye of Ugin are almost like a really expensive Eldrazi (or Construct I guess) that can just tutor for more... And really when it comes down to it, you just don't need that many Eldrazi. A few will do.

Heck, there's more Constructs in here than Eldrazi, and they serve as a primary win condition, but I wouldn't call this a Construct deck... Would I? Well, maybe I would... Eldrazi Construct Tribal. Yeah, that's good.

Mana Show

This deck has kind of a high land count, especially for all the mana-rocks that are included. But it's important that it gets as many land drops as possible. You never want to be one mana short. Emrakul, the Promised End does cost a lot, and there are a decent amount of high mana-value cards in the deck as well, so having enough lands is just nice.

Many of the lands also have another function as well, including card draw, tutoring, re-animation, and other things too!

This deck contain 8 card types, Battle excluded, which helps reduce the cost of Emrakul. These are: Land, Artifact, Enchantment, Creature, Sorcery, Instant, Planeswalker, Tribal. The most common card types to have in the graveyard are creatures, artifacts, and lands. Artifact Creatures and Tribal cards are great here because they can count for 2 mana towards Emrakul if in the graveyard.

Tribal cards include Skittering Invasion, All is Dust, and Eldrazi Conscription.

The one colorless Battle, Invasion of Ravnica , just barely doesn't make it. There's also not really a great way to get it into the graveyard, aside from Codex Shredder.

As far as Wastes, I am torn between having more of them in order to use Extraplanar Lens and Endless Atlas, or having more utility lands to use Crucible of Worlds. Wastes are still important for cards that tutor for basic lands, etc. I've currently opted for the Crucible of Worlds...

When Urza's Workshop came out, I put all the Urza lands in (I already had card:Urza's Legacy but not the others). It's a good idea to try and copy Urza's Workshop with Vesuva and Thespian's Stage.

City of Traitors and Ugin's Nexus I don't count as land cards, because they don't always act like lands. I think they act more like weird 0-mana Artifacts. City of Traitors great with a card:Crudible of Worlds.

Lands that put themselves in the graveyard are good because they could count for a mana towards Emrakul.

Mana dorks like Millikin or Plague Myr seem like they'd be good in here, but for me, they have summoning sickness, and are more vulnerable to removal, and I don't like that. I'd rather have mana rocks like Fractured Powerstone, or utility lands.

Combos, etc. Show

Basalt Monolith + Forsaken Monument = Infinite mana.

Metalworker + Staff of Domination, with 3 or more artifacts in hand = Infinite mana, infinite card draw, and infinite life.

Metalworker + Voltaic Construct, with at least 2 artifacts in hand = Infinite mana.

Infinite mana + Walking Ballista = infinite damage.

Clock of Omens and infinite mana with either Metalworker + Voltaic Construct, or Basalt Monolith + The Mycosynth Gardens (as a Basalt Monolith) = Infinite untaps of any artifact.

Scrapyard Recombiner can help assemble Metalworker/Voltaic Construct combo. With infinite mana, untap it with Voltaic Construct and use it again to get Walking Ballista for the win. It also gets Foundry Inspector, Kuldotha Forgemaster, and Cityscape Leveler.

Sensei's Divining Top + Mystic Forge = Draw a card for 1 mana. Add Foundry Inspector, Jhoira's Familiar or Ugin, the Ineffable = Draw library for free.

Moonsilver Key can search for Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring, Jeweled Lotus, other 0 mana cost rocks etc., or Metalworker, or Basalt Monolith, even Forsaken Monument!, or even just The Celestus to draw some cards...

Urza's Saga can tutor for any of the 0 - 1 mana-value artifacts, including mana rocks like Jeweled Lotus, Mana Crypt, Mana Vault, Sol Ring, to ramp out Emrakul. Or other 1 mana-value cards like Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant, Sensei's Divining Top, Codex Shredder, etc... It can also count for 2 card types in the graveyard. Ultimately, this card could count for up to 7 mana to cast Emrakul. Tap for 1 mana when the 3rd counter is put on it, before you sacrifice it. Get Jeweled Lotus, sacrifice it for 3 mana. Now there are 3 card types in the graveyard, plus 1 floating mana from Urza's Saga, plus 3 from Jeweled Lotus equals 7 mana!

Unwinding Clock can untap your mana rocks, including the ones that don't untap normally. With enough mana, you could activate Planar Bridge or Planar Portal during each players turn to assemble a combo or even win on an opponent's turn.

Erratic Portal is great because can bounce your own creatures to protect them, and can potentially mess with opponent's board state and tempo by returning their creatures. It also let's you re-use cast triggers on creatures like the Eldrazi and Cityscape Leveler. Also, if you get and infinite mana untaps with the Clock of Omens combos, it you add Erratic Portal and Gerrard's Hourglass Pendant, and you can control each opponent's turns for the rest of the game, and they will not get the extra turns that Emrakul usually gives them!

I love Citanul Flute. I think it's a really cool card. I love that it's colorless, and I love the idea of playing an ancient bone flute to summon robots and eldritch horrors! I've switched this card in and out of the deck so many times, but it's usually the first to get cut for a new card, and then put back in if I can... This card is best at assembling creature based combos, specifically Metalworker and Voltaic Construct. It's also really cool that you can tap for X=0 and get Walking Ballista!
Once you start tutoring for creatures with mana-value higher than six though, Planar Portal and Planar Bridge become more effective than the Flute, as it becomes cheaper to use those cards to search for and cast expensive creatures than the Flute. Additionally, the Bridge and Portal are just stronger cards, as they tutor for any card, not just creatures. If the strongest thing about Citanul Flute is that it can help assemble Voltaic Metalworker combo, it seems a little too expensive for that... Like I said, I'm always torn about cutting this card, but with more powerful and/or cheaper ways to do that, like the Bridge, Portal, Moonsilver Key, Inventors' Fair, Scrapyard Recombiner, Eye of Ugin, which also tutor for non-creature cards, it can start to seem too conditional...

Cryptothrall seems like an auto-include, but I'm not sure... It _is_a construct, so can be tutored for with Scrapyard Recombiner, and it can help protect key creature combo pieces, but...
It is defensive, not offensive. And it's conditional, in that it only protects other artifact creatures (not itself or colorless creatures), and still only does that the one time it uses itself as bait, and then it's dead If Cryptothrall was made indestructible, or if there were 2 of them, like from a Sculpting Steel or The Mycosynth Gardens, it would be really strong. But that's a lot of hoops to jump through, just to give a few creatures hexproof. I'd rather be using resources and turns to assemble combos and win.

A fun thing to do is to use Planar Bridge to find Clock of Omens, untap the Bridge, and then find Forsaken Monument, untap again to find Basalt Monolith. This requires a lot of mana, and extra artifacts hanging around for the Clock, and sometimes this needs to happen in more than one turn, and not necessarily in that order...
But, once these cards are assembled and you have infinite mana, you can either use the Bridge to get Planar Portal and use that to get Walking Ballista to hand and cast it for infinite mana to win, or use the Bridge to get The Mycosynth Gardens, and turn it into a Basalt Monolith. Now with your infinite mana, you can untap both Monoliths to activate the Clock to untap and activate The Bridge infinity times!

Codex Shredder can help get card types into the graveyard, and can also nerf opponents trying to manipulate the top of their library. It is also one of the only colorless ways to get cards back from the graveyard...

The old Darksteel Forge,Nevinyrral's Disk, Mycosynth Lattice, Karn, Silver Golem package, while fun, nostalgic, and dear to me, is really just too slow, conditional, and clunky I think... At this point it's more efficient to just focus on casting Emrakul between 4 or 6, which is also more relevant than casting any of those cards on their own I think. But I still really want to put these cards in...!

Fractured Powerstone = Roll the planar die.

Commander Masters Cards Show

I was excited about the Commander Masters Eldrazi deck coming out, even though I knew there would only be 10 new cards, I was hoping that many of the would be upgrades for this deck. Ultimately I think the only ones worth including here are Desecrate Reality,Abstruse Archaic, and probably Rise of the Eldrazi. I guess 3 out of 10 ain't that bad...

Desecrate Reality is comparable to Scour from Existence, which isn't really that good. But, it's important to have instants in the deck to reduce Emrakul's casting cost, and there really aren't many good colorless instants. If I thought that Scour from Existence was good enough to include, then Desecrate reality is too. It's slightly less flexible of a card as it can only hit even costed cards, but it can hit multiple targets and return something from your graveyard to battlefield.

Abstruse Archaic I'm still on the fence about. I think it's very powerful when it can copy Emrakul and other creatures' cast triggers, as well as cards like Planar Portal and Planar Bridge. It's pretty cheap to cast and activate, but on it's own, it doesn't do anything. Is it worth it?

Rise of the Eldrazi. This card is so cool. It combines the cast abilities of the 3 original Eldrazi. Totally should've been Tribal, but still so cool. However, I have not included the 3 original Eldrazi in this deck. Annihilator is a super powerful ability, but I think that the new Ulamog and Kozilek's cast abilities are way better than the originals, so much so that they are worth including over the originals, despite not having Annihilator. If I really wanted more Annihilator, I'd probably even play cards like Bane of Bala Ged, Pathrazer of Ulamog, Flayer of Loyalties, or even Breaker of Armies over the original titans...Eldrazi Conscription is included, mostly because it's a Tribal Enchantment, but it also acts very similarly to just a huge beater with Annihilator. Even though Rise of the Eldrazi doesn't come with a big stompy body or annihilator like the original Eldrazi, it still has a very high mana-value just like those other Eldrazi, and guess I do consider this to be like another big Eldrazi.
It can still draw you into an Eldrazi. And I guess worst case scenario besides just having this stuck in your hand not able to cast it, could be, nothing on the battlefield to destroy but at least you can destroy a land, and then you draw all lands or ramp when you needed anything but that. But even then, it replaces it's self with an extra turn, giving you an extra land drop, and an extra card. It's kind of becomes like draw a card, put a land into play, and destroy something for free, since you get a whole extra turn to use the mana that it cost again anyways... I know that Tribal is considered to be kind of a mistake card type, as it creates weird rules things, and is generally kind of confusing. It probably won't be printed again, or in very limited ways. I realize that it wouldn't help make Emrakul cheaper as written since it exiles, which makes sense becuase this would be basically an auto win if you could re-cast this... hmmm... But despite all that, it should still totally be tribal. It's like the most Eldrazi card ever? Overall I think this card is probably a bomb, but more play testing is required to make sure.

Zhulodok, Void Gorger seems like it would be great in a deck like this, with kind of a lot of high mana-value cards, but... It doesn't do anything on it's own, and is pretty conditional. Also, even though it seems like there are a lot of high mana-value cards in the deck, there are even more low mana-value cards. Although a lot of the cards that cost less than 7 mana would be cool to cascade into, you will often cascasde into a mana rock, which is late stage ramp I guess, which could help get those last couple mana to cast Emrakul, which is good, but is that conditial scenario worth the price and uncertianty? Ultimately it seems way too conditional, it doesn't do anything on it's own, is a little expensive to cast itself, and then also requires even more more expensive cards to be useful, and it can always wiff off the cascade into nothing relevant. I think there's only around 10 cards that would even trigger it.
Compared with card:Abtruse Archaic, which is simmilar - in that it doesn't do anything on it's own, is conditional, and requires other cards to make it do anything - Abtruse Archaic is cheaper, and can interact with more cards in more powerful ways. The Archaic can copy Emrakul's cast ability and anyone else's! Imagine copying a Planar Bridge ability: Put Basalt Monolith and Forsaken Monument both into play, infinite mana! Granted this would cost more mana total to do (19 mana), but Abtruse Archaic can be cast earlier and has more interactions with different cards, while Zhulodok is still expensive (at least 13 mana to cast and trigger), and will only ever result in getting 2 random cards, that's all it can do, no other cool tricks, unless you randomly cascade into something relevant... When Zhulodok works, it is very powerful, and if there were even more high mana cost spells it would probably fit in. Zhulodok seems really cool at first, but I think in this build, it's too much investment and risk for too little pay off.

Skittering Cicada is a cool card, and is similar to Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter and Shimmer Myr, but I wonder how good granting flash is... It's great for protecting things, as in you can cast all your things right before your own turn so your opponents don't have a whole turn cycle to consider and interact with your cards. It similarly gives creatures pseudo haste by letting you cast them by surprise before your turn, and then being able to activate them.
Shimmer Myr is not worth including I think, as it only grants flash to artifacts, and has no other abilities.
Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter gives all colorless spells flash, and has flying, and will gradually increase in strength. Skittering Cicada is not an artifact, so it lacks the synergy that Liberator does with much of the rest of the deck. It's really cool that you can combat tricks with the Cicada by buffing it by casting things, and it can get huge if you cast expensive spells. It can be a big stompy threat, but because I still kind of wonder how powerful exactly granting flash is, and it's lack of artifact synergy, and the fact that there's already a lot of stompy in the deck anyways, I just don't think it's quite as good as Liberator, and I don't think it's worth the repetition.

At first I thought that Darksteel Monolith would be an auto-include, but it's actually very similar to Zhulodok in that they are both kind of expensive, don't do anything on their own, are very conditional, and require that you have other expensive cards in hand to do anything. Although it does feel cool to cast Darksteel Monolith and then cast Ulamog for free, all you really did was get an extra 2 mana. And even though a free Metalworker is cool, it doens't actually seem that exciting when when you spent 8 mana to do that. Also, this deck can struggle with card draw sometimes, and often times you cast a bunch of ramp early to cast Emrakul, but then you have an empty hand... At least in this scenario with Zhulodok, if you do get to activate it off a top deck expensive card at least you will cascade into two things, kind of like drawing cards... But with Darksteel Monolith, if you top deck an expensive card, you probably already have the mana to cast it at that point, so the Monolith does basically nothing. It doesn't help early game, and by the time it's useful, it's kind of useless. It would be cool to have Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter, Unwinding Clock, Planar Portal, and Darksteel Monolith all together, but at that point, again you probably have a bunch of mana rocks which all untap too so the Monolith becomes less relevant, and at that point you should probably be trying to assemble an infinite combo which all use cheap cards anyways. Overall t's just kind of overkill, is too slow, too conditional, too un-synergistic, and even when it does the thing, it's not always even that cool...

Calamity of the Titans is similar to Titan's Presence, which I have also not included, in that they both conditional and require a creature in hand with relevant mana-value or power to do anything. Calamity of the Titans is worse though because it is more expensive, and often times even more useless as I would rarely want to destroy my own creatures, many of which are key combo pieces and happen to have low mana-value. Even though increasing the number of instant and sorcery cards would theoretically be good as it increases the chance of Emrakul's cost being reduced, these cards are just too conditional/do-nothing/nonbo to include.
There's also a bunch of removal in the deck already, which effect all permanents, not just creatures.

Ugin, Eldrazi Harbinger Show

Karn, Silver Golem had been thinking. About Mirrodin. And about how it had become New Phyrexia. He thought about feelings.

Karn finally decided that maybe he should do something. He told Ugin, the Spirit Dragon that he was going to New Phyrexia to look at it, and think about some things...

When Karn finally got around to checking in on his own creation, he was faced with a reality that he had not thought about, despite all the time that he spent thinking.

Karn had expected the typical Phyrexian flavor of what had previously been his own Mirrodin. However, he arrived to a place that was devoid of anything, except the faint hint of a horizon. It was similar to his original idea for the precursor to Mirridon, Argentum, in that there was nothing here. Karn had spent a lot time thinking about Argentum, and it had been his magnum opus. He thought about feelings.

Then Karn started to think again. "Nice place" he thought. "I thought there were supposed to Phyrexians here" he thought.

Karn decided he would take a walk, to clear his mind, and think about things.

Karn traversed the void of his mind, and his new surroundings, for days, weeks, and months, through a landscape without form, color or sound, under a sky of nothingness, a nothingness that, once Karn considered it, was no longer nothing, which the nothingness of this world then also consumed. It felt familiar to him.

Aside from seeing his own body, and a vague sense of gravity, the only other point of reference Karn had for his own existence was the dust-like quality of the void, which swirled like a mist, or a super-fine powder, as he moved.

At some point, Karn thought that he would stand still for a while as he was thinking. Eventually, he noticed that the dust had started to move around him, even though he had been still for a long time. It was a breeze, a sign that somewhere, there was something else.

The breeze became a steady wind, and in what might have been the distance, Karn percieved an irregularity, an amorphous shadow in the dark, neither far nor close.

As Karn was thinking about this, the gentle swirling of the fine dust whorled into a cyclone around Karn, and he thought that he might have what might be a feeling in his mind space.

Then suddenly, all the dust around Karn was sucked away, revealing a glistening, geometric lattice beneath his feet, and all around him. At the edges of the dust cyclone, Karn could see large shapes, and the flickering, writhing shadows of what looked like tentacles.

Then, in a crackling flash, the dust, and somehow reality, shattered, and Karn saw before him three figures which seemed infinitely large. Karn could not tell where they ended, or where his reality started.

Karn thought about how this whole situation reminded him of something that he thought that he had heard the Gatewatch talk about. "Hm, Eldrazi", Karn thought.

Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Kozilek, the Great Distortion transposed themselves into Karn's perception, tearing at his existence, as Emrakul, the Promised End attempted to process Karn's mind, but that was a lost cause. Karn tried to summon the metallic ground beneath him to his aid, but there was nothing. The ground was not metal. Although Karn could see the jagged, regular, crystalline chrome beneath his feet, it was nothing. The dust was nothing. The Eldrazi were nothing. Karn, was nothing. Emrakul and the other Eldrazi did not need to distort Karn's mind in order to ingest him. Karn's mind, was nothing.

Now it wasn't unusual for years to go by without hearing a word from Karn, Silver Golem, but Ugin, the Spirit Dragon kept thinking about him going to New Phyrexia, and kept thinking that if something bad were to happen to him, it could be a long time before anyone knew, since Karn was usually M.I.A. anyways. So, Ugin decided that he would just go check in on New Phyrexia too, and see if everything was okay.

Upon arrival, Ugin realized immediately that the Eldrazi had completely consumed New Phyrexia. How they got here he did not know, but he knew this was bad, real bad. He also knew that the Edrazi would already be aware of his presence as well, and before he had finished that thought to himself, the fog of dust surrounding him became a screeching vortex of distortion. Without hesitation, Ugin engulfed himself in Ghostfire, as his colorless magic was strong against the Eldrazi's void magic.

The three titans now stood around Ugin, three points of a triangle with Ugin in the center, alight in ghostfire. Ugin knew that the Eldrazi were much stronger here, and now, than they had been on Zendikar, as they had already consumed the entire plane, as well as the power and energy of all the phyrexians. He also knew that they were hungry, as there was nothing left here. Ugin could not planeswalk away, as the titans were distorting the nature of reality around him, and were it not for the ghostfire, he would already have been twisted asunder. Ugin did not know if the Eldrazi had feelings, but if they did, the ones they held towards Ugin would not be pleasant. Ugin thought he could sense anger, or something like it, in the intensity of the Eldrazi's presence, and although his ghostfire would protect him for now, he alone could not fend off an all out attack.

Although the Titans had Ugin trapped, and were trying to penetrate his ghostflame, they were not approaching him. As Ugin was contemplating why this might be, he started to hear an irregular, metallic beat, like dozens of enormous, muffled bells, echoing through the a canyon in the haze, and as the sound grew closer, a metallic tinkling, and scratching, and whispering. From between the three Titans, came marching enormous conglomerations of Phrexian behemoths which had been twisted and defiled with the maddening chaos of the Eldrazi. Apparently the Eldrazi had not devoured everything here, and had kept some of the most hideous and terrible Phyrexian abominations to further warp in their own twisted way. These Phyrexian Eldrazi did not stop marching, and continued directly towards Ugin. Now, Ugin would be forced to fight with these colossuses as the Titans stood at a distance, continuing to try and diffract his ghostflame.

Ugin could not hesitate any longer, and in a blazing colorless infero, he charged at the horrible beasts. Ugin's blasts of ghostflame sent masses of writhing flesh and splinters of metal flying. But the goliaths were not deterred, as the blasted pieces of themselves came crawling and slithering back together, and soon, Ugin would have no place to turn. As Ugin fought desperately to create space between him and the Phyrexian Eldrazi, he realized that he was still not even fighting the Titans yet, while their influence on him was growing stronger, refracting and dimming his ghostflame, and exhausting and cracking his mind.

It would be futile for Ugin, for as he was pummeled, and his ghostflame extinguished, his mind and body would be warped and shattered, and he would succumb to the Eldrazi. Much like they had used their Phyrexian Eldrazi Conscriptions against Ugin, the Eldrazi would now use Ugin to prepare the next plane that they were to devour, quelling any would-be resistance ahead of their arrival.

He had become, Ugin, Eldrazi Harbinger.

Turns out, the first place the Eldrazi wanted to go next was Strixhaven, to learn a few lessons and hang with their old bud Wandering Archaic !
