Nunu312 on Orzhov Spirits

Love a good spirit deck, and nice to see a new commander doing it!

I think you've got some great cards in there that probably don't work as well as you want them to. Luminous Angel is incredibly expensive for a 4/4 flyer that might generate 2-3 tokens. By the time you put it down that's just not a relevant amount. Oyobi, Who Split the Heavens Is in very much the same boat. Because it only happens on casting, it can at most happen 5 times, as that's the amount of spirits you have to cast (and you have no arcane spells). Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite Is a fantastic card but can occasionally create friction at the table. I don't necessarily suggest that you cut it, but do consider it. It can easily create an environment where some people are unable to play their decks at all until it is delt with.

A bit of the same but Long-Forgotten Gohei definitely fits, but you only have 6 spirit spells and no arcane spells, so you're only using half of it. Etchings of the Chosen is the same price but has an extra ability. You may just want to run both though?

The first thing for additions are the token doublers. These will really help you capitalise on your commander as they will act upon each instance. So instead of casting Triplicate Spirits and getting a rather underwhelming 3, you instead get 6. Then at the end of turn you get another 6... only this is doubled as well, instead of 3, you get 18.Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Anointed Procession are the standouts here, although they are pretty pricy in real world dollars.

Overall though, I feel your ways of generating tokens is very on theme, but not very sustainable. A key thing that you might have missed is that your commander generate spirits for each tokens you make, not spirit tokens. So Collector's Vault, makes a treasure token, free spirit. You have a huge amount of ways to make tokens but a lot of them are humans or other some such (Call the Coppercoats, Martial Coup) so they may not be on brand. Look into ways you can make those one or two treasure / clue / food tokens as you just otherwise play normally.

A conspicuous absence is any of the Teysas. Teysa, Envoy of Ghosts is expensive but fun. Teysa, Opulent Oligarch is much cheaper and synergises VERY well with your commander. Teysa, Orzhov Scion requires a bit more of the black/white spirits, but might still work very well. Teysa Karlov doesn't synergise super well, but has good abilities regardless and certainly isn't a bad pick. The Kaya planeswalkers also often deal with white black spirits as well as having a bit of control so they might be good to look at Kaya the Inexorable being the standout.

another fun card that is changed entirely by your commander Afterlife Insurance and having any method of sacrificing your spirits changes it from just saving those spirits, to doubling their amount. It would go well with Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim, but that starts to lean more into aristocrats than pure spirit tokens.

Another thing is that a lot of white ramp works well with bounce or sac land, you've got the obvious one but you might be able to increase it with Lotus Fieldfoil and Lotus Vale. Things like Land Tax is a staple for white, but even when you're just running Priest of the Blessed Graf they can help you make him work.

My final point is that you don't seem to have a good way of protecting your quite expensive commander. Your group might not place that big an emphasis on commanders, but it's more fun if she sticks around. There are the old standouts of Lightning Greavesfoil and Swiftfoot Boots, but there are a lot of options.

I am building a custom commander who uses Offspring in Bant colors - some things I am waiting to hear the rulings later today on how they'd interact with the offspring mechanic (Kicker, X spells, evoke, etc.)

Some ideas that come to mind right away are clones like griffstick mentioned. I'm partial to Vizier of Many Faces because the Embalm ability is especially useful if you plan on doing any token synergy or token doubling which brings me to my next suggestions - Anointed Procession and Mondrak, Glory Dominus. Both are mono white and will double all of your offspring tokens.

The rest is up to you, you could go wide and deal auto ETB damage with the likes of Purphoros, God of the Forge, Impact Tremors etc. Or many many other directions. If you need any suggestions or input let me know

Goldberserkerdragon Came back to let you know how the first evening of playing went. Played 3 games and won the last 2. The first game I made a grievous error, or I'd have won it, as well. I let the R/G Omnath stay on the field as someone boardwiped his 30 elementals while I had a Generous Gift in hand. LOL. After the stupidity left my body, this deck went crazy. At one point I had Anointed Procession, Mondrak, Glory Dominus, and Sigil of the Empty Throne all out. Making 4 Faeries and Angels off a single enchantment cast is nutso!

Very happy with the deck. Now I'm over here side eyeing the Eldrazi Faeries that are coming in MH3. LOL

One of the main weaknesses of any creature-based build is going to be Boardwipe effects. And, especially now that there are exile-based boardwipes floating around in the mainstream (your Sunfalls, your Farewells, etc), you can't even always rely on indestructible effects to get around this like one used to when boardwipes were all just "Destroy all".

That doesn't leave you a ton of options to get around this, but one I would look at for sure is a couple copies of Guardian of Faith. Phasing is the only way tokens can leave the battlefield and not just instantly poof, and he even shares Spirit synergy with the rest of your build. This makes him pretty much the only option for a deck like this to bypass a wipe.

Another one that could be fun here is Divine Visitation with all your token-generating effects, as well as Anointed Procession and/or Mondrak, Glory Dominus for some doubling effects.

Anyway +1 for some neat picks; I hope some of this helps, and good luck either way!

I see your point NV_1980 and I think you were absolutely right in suggesting them, thanks again! To be fair another issue I have is simply finding room for more control cards, because in general I prefer running higher on my own synergy. So if I have to choose between a more synergistic (say lifegain or token-generation) card and control one that would slow down my opponents but add relatively little to my gameplan, then I'd always choose the former. As of now I simply wouldn't know what to cut to make space for them haha. But yes I absolutely agree about Anointed Procession, I would love to have one but it's just too expensive and I always build my decks on a budget (as much as I can). I was lucky enough to pull a Mondrak, Glory Dominus from a pack a couple of years back though, so at least I have one token doubler :D

Kambal is a pretty sweet design, though I think you're maybe trying to go in a few too many directions.

Since Kambal's second ability doesn't care how many tokens are created, I would consider cutting Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Anointed Procession even though they are both amazing cards otherwise. But if you really want to lean into Kambal they don't directly help your game plan.

In general you've got a sizable aristocrats package, but only a few sac outlets. If you want to go aristocrats I think you want to lean further into it. So either add some more sac outlets or dial it way back and focus on the other aspects of how Kambal works. Mind you a card like Suture Priest is probably good whatever route you go there.

You've got a couple of slower and not consistent token creators like Halo Fountain and Battle Angels of Tyr that I think could be cut.

I also think your protection package is too large. I think you'd be better off with maybe 3-4 protection pieces maximum, and ideally ones that synergize with the rest of your game plan like Grand Crescendo and Fanatical Devotion. I'd remove all the enchantment options you have there.

I'd also dial your board wipes down, though that could be meta-dependent, but 5 seems like 3-4 too many for your deck.

There are a handful of cards that probably aren't advancing your game plan too.

  • Bloodchief Ascension is a crazy powerful card, but you don't directly leverage it. That card also points a massive target on whomever plays it, so I don't run it unless the deck fully leverages it.
  • Cathars' Crusade is very powerful but slower and makes managing the board state a nightmare. I've actually taken it out of most of my decks just because I hate having to deal with all the different counters.
  • Tainted Remedy is an okay card in the right deck, but I'm not seeing what it's doing for you here unless your meta is filled with lifegain decks.

Good luck with your build!

If I may add a few other notes to your thought process.

At this point, you are already on the track of using known combos and putting them into a Naya shell. There are many other combos that can go with this, you just need to tutor for them.

Note that haste is an important aspect to this. Zealous Conscripts is much better than Hyrax Tower Scout or Sparring Mummy for this reason, even though both have cheaper mana value. Without haste, your million tokens will just be board-wiped. You could argue for redundancy, but the truth is that tutors and recursion such as Eternal Witness and Skullwinder are much better, because they add to your strategy with more flexibility.

Most creature tutors are green non-creature spells that search for green creatures. However, you want to keep the amount of non-creature spells low, because Ghired's ability doesn't apply to them. But there are some great tutors that can help you find your pieces:

Most of these cards use ETBs. If you can give them haste - ideally with creatures - you can cast them, make use of their ETB, and directly tap them with Ghired for value. Anger comes to mind, Hellraiser Goblin is great (you won't be attacking, because you are going to tap your creatures with Ghired), Yarus, Roar of the Old Gods can be okay. As for non-creature spells, you have Mass Hysteria, Concordant Crossroads, Fervor, Rising of the Day. Though I would probably only consider Hammer of Purphoros as it can create tokens.

As for the token doublers, I'm not sure if they really fit the deck. Sure, they are staples for token strategies. But what's the point of making infinite tokens go double? Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Ojer Taq, Deepest Foundation  Flip will put a bounty on your head which is not a good thing in a combo-deck. You want to stay under the radar until you can go off.
Mondrak only doubles creature tokens, so you are not making more treasures. And the other doublers like Anointed Procession, Parallel Lives etc. will not tap with Ghired. Since you also want to put in all the other Naya-staple enchantments like Smothering Tithe and Guardian Project etc., you will just fill your deck with non-creatures that don't synergize with your commander.

Some cards worth mentioning are:
- Illusionist's Bracers - Cloudstone Curio (create a creature token, return a creature with an ETB to your hand). - Helm of the Host
