Thank you for stopping by.

I first became acquainted with Magic: The Gathering during Alpha set. After that initial foray where I was introduced by a neighbor to the game, I didn’t play again until the Tempest block. Then I took a long, 20 year hiatus until 2019 when another neighbor reinvigorated my desire to play by urging me to buy some Dominaria and Core 19 packs for a friendly draft. Since then I’ve found myself addicted to deck building.

I prefer traditional formats like Vintage/Legacy/Modern/Standard/Pauper as opposed to this zany, newfangled “Commander” format all the kids are raving about.

I lean toward the / end of the color spectrum; preferred hubs are Reanimator and any type of build that uses uncommon or otherwise off the wall strategies or win-cons.

God I miss the old artwork and flavor text from the older expansions; some of the new stuff is half decent but it doesn’t hold a candle to the gorgeous art of cards like those found in the Arabian Nights expansion or Mirage block. And then there’s the classical literary quotes on cards like Repentant Blacksmith, Juzam Djinn, Hammerheim, Karakas, Pendelhaven, Revelation...the list goes on! I weep softly when I realize just how lackluster today’s MtG sets are in this respect, by comparison. But, I digress.

Feel free to leave any comments or questions you may have on any of my decks; all upvotes are much appreciated as well.

Great effort for a youngster’s first foray into a daunting format. Much better than my first attempt.

A few suggestions that might work within the constraint of a tight budget:

•If you’re running , double down on the control aspect blue opens up. Countermagic is cheap (both mana wise and dollar wise) and crucial to sticking big plays. Your strategy should go something like ‘Play spell to get big creature into graveyard, play spell to get big creature out of graveyard, and keep a counterspell at the ready in case the opponent tries to interfere with that process.’

•Cut anything and everything that doesn’t directly contribute toward that gameplan. Try to ignore those ‘But I really like this card’ thoughts, and pay attention to the increased consistency this will net you.

•A specific observation I would make is that you don’t have anywhere near enough mana at your disposal. Aim for at least 22 lands in the deck. You won’t be hardcasting any 5+ cmc spells, true, but you absolutely must have mana at the ready when you need it or it’s basically game over. Incidentally, consider something like Drowned Catacomb instead of Undercity Sewers. There are other fairly inexpensive options as well, and they function more reliably than a land that is guaranteed to enter tapped.

Thanks for posting, JustJohn97. I haven’t had extensive hands on time with this deck, but it performs reasonably well in the average matchup. Anything designed to break it would succeed with little effort, but as something I break out once in awhile it’s capable enough. Always looking to fine tune things though, so I’ve added your suggestion to the maybeboard in case of future revisions.

If you’re looking for deck building tips, there are tons of knowledgeable people on this site. Some real experts. Don’t be afraid to tag a deck as ‘Help Wanted’ so people will know to chime in.

Before you buy any cards, if I were to offer a suggestion, it would be to settle on a particular ‘thing’ you want your deck to do (Win by aggro, ramp into big payoffs, control, etc) and double down on that one strategy. Ideally you’ll handpick fewer cards that support that gameplan and run more copies of each (3-4), as opposed to ‘one of this, one of that’. It’ll be much more consistent and fun to play.
