Surgical Extraction

Instant

( can be paid with either or 2 life.)

Choose target card in a graveyard other than a basic land card. Search its owner's graveyard, hand, and library for all cards with the same name as that card and exile them. Then that player shuffles their library.

With the upcoming Mh3, there’s two cards you may want to consider fitting into this brew: Sorin of House Markov, and Guide of Souls.

I really strongly feel like your mainboard needs 22 (maybe even 23?) lands instead of 21.

As far as your sideboard goes, it feels like you are particularly weak to the opponents interaction and/or combo strategies. In that vein i’d run something like:

————————————

In relation to some of the cards already in your sideboard selection, i’d suggest against them for the following reasons:

  • Stony Silence doesn’t do enough to artifacts decks, as many don’t use activated abilities too often - namely this hurts Scales, but not-really Affinity.

  • Inquisition of Kozilek is good against control and some kinds of combo. But only being able to hit 3-or-less mana makes this awkward against both. Combo decks you should already have answers for with my above suggestions. I don’t see this deck beating control whatever it does, so i don’t think there’s point trying to fight it with this card.

  • Kor Firewalker is only useful versus burn. Your deck should have absolutely no problem beating burn naturally, so this isn’t needed.

  • Sanctifier en-Vec feels like overkill if you’re already running Rest in Peace. Furthermore, it’s more red-hate in a deck already generally positioned well against a lot if red gameplans

  • Ghost Quarter i’m not sure why you’re running this? I assume for tron, but this really won’t slow them down enough to matter, and is more likely to mess with your own tempo.

  • Surgical Extraction is generally only good versus combo, but requires being in a deck with a LOT if ways to force discard/mill so you can reliably exile what you need to.

Yeah, I have Thragtusk, Six and Roxanne, Starfall Savant for my diverse threats against something like mill which runs Surgical Extraction. Cultivator Colossus also has no evasion or useful effects once it hits the field and is just a big dumb creature that can be chumped. Don't get me wrong, it is a decent card in the build, but it doesn't do enough for me to want to run it personally. Slots are super tight in the build, and are only getting tighter and tighter with all the cards we want to run now.

Also, I think I am now slotting in Springheart Nantuko as a 1-of to the main, since it can go infinite with basically every creature in the deck.

Ah, ok I see where you’re going now. This might be an interesting build for pauper; normally pinning all hopes to a single card isn’t a wise idea, as most other formats have Surgical Extraction type spells to nuke the whole strategy, but as far as I know nothing like that exists in Pauper.

Buried Alive is 3 mana, Demonic Tutor is 2 mana, and Bloodghast is 2 mana. If you cast Buried to dump a Bloodghast, it's still going to take another land play to get the same value as playing Bloodghast directly. I would cut Buried and just add another Bloodghast.

There aren't many repeatable sac outlets that draw cards, but Village Rites and Corrupted Conviction are solid, along with Deadly Dispute. I think these will help you more than long-term draw, but for the sake of completion Phyrexian Arena and Black Market Connections are the standard and top end, respectively.

Next thought is, you have a lot of potential finishers. The Exquisite Bond combo is the most generally useful, in my opinion, and you can get some redundancy with Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose. I would cut Mind Twist and two Exsanguinates for a couple Vitos and a couple more Thoughtseizes for more early advantage. Discard that you choose > random discard > discard that they choose.

Falkenrath Forebear can also work as Vampire-centric sacrifice fodder, especially alongside Voldaren Bloodcaster  Flip if you go hard in this direction, but it's a little less reliable. Maybe just break away from vampires and use another recursive creature.

How much does Surgical Extraction help you? If you're against graveyard decks or combo decks regularly, keep it in main deck. Otherwise, it's sideboard material. As I write that, I realize there's no sideboard listed--do you use sideboards?

Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is very good with Cabal Coffers, so keep those together. But how do you use the fetchlands? If it's only to find another basic Swamp, there's no reason not to just use more basic Swamps.

Jank deck idea: use Surgical Extraction (or something similar) on yourself to exile a lot of Slime Against Humanity:s from your library, then cast whatever you got left in your hand in order to make some big Oozes

I like this deck. It's pretty much the worst nightmare for my own legacy deck so it's a good hypothetical challenge, one I've used to hone my SB a bit. A great controlly aggro artifact archetype. I like that you've kept it updated too. Nice work!

The only thing that would make me fear this deck more would be some Karn, the Great Creators with a toolbox SB. Maybe only a couple Karns (not sure you want to go full trontard with 4x) but the ability to pull Swords to Plowsharesed creatures back to hand is significant all on its own, forgetting for a moment all the toolbox shenanigans it opens up (and it enables you to 3x a bunch of 4x to put 1x in SB where things can't be Surgical Extractioned, which is one way to open up MB slots for the Karns).

Some thoughts that you can take or leave:

  • Fraying Sanity is a card that can only really be justified as a 1-of at-best. Drawing a second copy will almost always lose you the game as you’ll never get time to play it, and mill games can easily be lost by one useless draw.

  • Running 4x Jace, the Perfected Mind seems excessive. 2-3 feels like the most a deck can justify before its high mana cost impedes deck functionality.

  • I get what you’re aiming for with Scheming Symmetry, but it’s far more gimmick-than-useful. The fact this card puts you down 1 card in-hand means its almost always hurting you more than helping you - it might help with one strong turn, but the card disadvantage will ruin your ability to close-out games. Imo just run the full playset of Field of Ruin and aim for more ”individually strong” cards.

  • imo your mainboard feels lacking in quantity of both interaction (Fatal Push, Surgical Extraction) and mill-spells (Tasha's Hideous Laughter). I think Fraying Sanity, Scheming Symmetry, and Trapmaker's Snare are all taking up a lot of space in your deck, and taking away your ability to compete.
