Tainted Remedy

Enchantment

If an opponent would gain life, that player loses that much life instead.

Tainted Remedy was in because a deck like this wins after a cascade of opponent life loss triggers. This can be easily disrupted by lifegain on the opponents side. However, y'all are correct in that it doesn't advance my game plan. Chop chop.

Bloodchief Ascension is a pet card. It is also a card that has won me numerous games on its own. It would be easy enough to get 3 counters with Kambal's trigger but again, not directly tied to tokens. Good suggestion albeit a painful one.

Halo Fountain just seemed like a fun and wierd alt-win con but your right that it is slow. It also requires me to have tapped creatures.

Going to take a closer look at the aristocrats support. I cut a lot of the sac outlets earlier which was a good observation. Nadier's Nightblade and Mirkwood Bats will definitely stay but a lot of the others can go. Also, Ophiomancer and Dreadhorde Invasion don't work at the level they should without a sac outlet on the board.

Not sure about Battle Angels of Tyr just yet, since just attacking creates token copies of himself. But he'll be close to the cut list.

Part of the reasoning on the number of board wipes was the number of indestructible options for Kambal. Will cut at least one board wipe tonight.

Refering to Basshunter's commnent, I haven't put the final mana base in just yet but Forbidden Orchard will be in there. Mana bases tend to only take me 5 minutes to build. I have some effects that give tokens to my opponents but I'm leaning more heavily into Kambal's second ability. I've generally been looking at consistent token generation instead of one off effects aimed at my opponents. However, Curse of Disturbance will get another look.

Thank you for all of the comments. It definetly gets me much further to completion.

I'm here cause of your post asking for cuts. Why is Tainted Remedy in here? If I'm not really missing something, it seems fully off here.

Kambal is a pretty sweet design, though I think you're maybe trying to go in a few too many directions.

Since Kambal's second ability doesn't care how many tokens are created, I would consider cutting Mondrak, Glory Dominus and Anointed Procession even though they are both amazing cards otherwise. But if you really want to lean into Kambal they don't directly help your game plan.

In general you've got a sizable aristocrats package, but only a few sac outlets. If you want to go aristocrats I think you want to lean further into it. So either add some more sac outlets or dial it way back and focus on the other aspects of how Kambal works. Mind you a card like Suture Priest is probably good whatever route you go there.

You've got a couple of slower and not consistent token creators like Halo Fountain and Battle Angels of Tyr that I think could be cut.

I also think your protection package is too large. I think you'd be better off with maybe 3-4 protection pieces maximum, and ideally ones that synergize with the rest of your game plan like Grand Crescendo and Fanatical Devotion. I'd remove all the enchantment options you have there.

I'd also dial your board wipes down, though that could be meta-dependent, but 5 seems like 3-4 too many for your deck.

There are a handful of cards that probably aren't advancing your game plan too.

  • Bloodchief Ascension is a crazy powerful card, but you don't directly leverage it. That card also points a massive target on whomever plays it, so I don't run it unless the deck fully leverages it.
  • Cathars' Crusade is very powerful but slower and makes managing the board state a nightmare. I've actually taken it out of most of my decks just because I hate having to deal with all the different counters.
  • Tainted Remedy is an okay card in the right deck, but I'm not seeing what it's doing for you here unless your meta is filled with lifegain decks.

Good luck with your build!

Far away from having been featured, but there used to be a mtg-judge channel where one of my questions got answered in a mailbag video. This was many, many years ago and I could not find the original vid, but someone seems to have reuploaded it - first question with Rain of Gore+Beacon of Immortality is mine... Tainted Remedy had not been printed at the time of recording:

RiotRunner789 on Favorite EDH Cards

My favorite card is Grave Pact but that isn't quite niche. I don't seem to have as many oddball fun cards that I tend to play but there are a few oddball or less played ones at least.

Black: Koskun Falls is a favorite of mine. I prefer decks that do not attack, so the tapping is not a big downside. Tainted Remedy because it makes opponent's creatures with lifelink funny. Gift of Doom which doesn't use the stack when morphing which has come in handy more than once. Pestilence is one of my favorite black board wipes which typically is on my board with an indestructible creature. Dystopia since at least someone is playing Selesnya.

White: Peacekeeper because no means no. Aura of Silence use to be more niche but has seen some prominent reprints. Solid removal with a tax effect has tripped up more than one opponent. Mandate of Peace is a great fog and a counter spell in some situations. Underplayed.

Green: Hall of Gemstone for any monogreen deck. Had a blue player try to win on my endstep and about 5 minutes into their combo, I asked where there blue mana was coming from.

Orzhov: Batwing Brume has killed a few Kranko players for me and saved me several times.

Colorless: Null Brooch is just Isochron Scepter with Negate already attached. Arena of the Ancients is great for when my commander doesn't need to tap, or attack, or is played after this and has vigilance. Great card no one expects.

Red: Apocalypse or Jokulhaups for the hard reset. Stranglehold because blue players are the worst and tutoring takes too long.

Blue: Mana Vortex for the slow decent into hell.

Personally I would add in at least some creature removal here. (Ossification is a great start)

Why? Because I know a LOT of builds that run Knight of Dusk's Shadow and/or Blightbeetle in their decks just because Lifegain/Countergain is so common and can be such an easy strat to shut down. If either of those cards hit the board Turn 2 you're dead in your tracks. You also might look out for some enchantment hate since Solemnity has a few uses in a couple of different builds, and it similarly would shut you down. There's also Tainted Remedy floating around in some decks, just because so many effects include some kind of lifegain bonus that it's easy to flipping it all to damage instead works against a wide variety of builds to varying degrees.

Light of Hope is good for enchantment hate in your case since (in the event you don't need Enchantment hate) the other 2 options are very useful for your build & keep with its synergy.

Further, I think Lunarch Veteran  Flip would serve you better in the slots in place of your Impassioned Orators. Not only are they cheaper to get out, they can come back into play if they're killed giving them a lot more versatility than the 1 extra pwr/tgh that the Orator gets you for that 1 extra mana.

Also I 100% agree with the above comment that Blue splash in here is doing you NO good at all (it's even increasing the number of 'enters tapped' lands you're running since you're using the guildgate; go straight Black/White with this puppy, either a Plains or a Swamp basic even would be better to draw in those slots.

Hope some of this helps give you some direction, and either way it's nice to see another fellow Arena player here using the site! +1 just for that!
