Slab Hammer

Artifact — Equipment

Whenever equipped creature attacks, you may return a land you control to its owners hand. If you do, the creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.

With only 16 lands in your deck, you won’t have the mana to cast Desolation Twin until you’ve drawn around 38 cards… there is no way a game is going that long regardless of format/playstyle.

If I were making changes, I would ditch all of Hedron Blade (too weak, too niche), Slab Hammer (really bad card), Desolation Twin (the game’s never going long enough to cast it), and both Retreat to Hagra and Retreat to Valakut (neither really do anything).

In their place I would add 6 more lands, 4x Lightning Bolt, and 4x Flame Slash

@wallisface

hey, thanks for the feedback!

as far as Slab Hammer goes i was dropping the land Looming Spires I had picked up during combat, not knowing I could only do that during main phases. But still the way it works was cool for the deck I was against, Mono-Black zombie with deathtouch.

i have the desolation twin in just for an easy discard for when im hit with those spells, and my pod plays a lot of 2-headed giant and sometimes we get far enough to play him.

i didnt have a lot of issues with mana because very little costs more than 3.

if you were to edit the deck, what would you do? im not looking to spend more than like $20 overall. i have most cards from bfz because i bought a case hunting for expiditions.

Thanks!

Some thoughts:

  • your deck is at 61 cards and had 5 copies of Culling Drone… i assume this is a mistake and you’re only running 4?

  • 16 lands is egregiously low, especially for what looks like a midrange deck. For context, by turn 6 you’ll only have hit your 3rd land drop around 75% of the time. 31% of the time you’ll miss your land-drop on turn 2!! That’s super-grim considering how high your mana curve is - and how games are often decided by turn 4-5. You want 22-23 lands minimum.

  • even with a higher land count, you have zero chance of ever casting Desolation Twin in a game.

  • You mention you think you were playing Slab Hammer wrong - what were you doing? However you played it, the card is really, really bad, and i’d suggest ditching it.

This looks pretty fun. It seems you are running Yedora more or less as a "generic green stompy". This is fine, and if you want to keep it that way, have fun.

There are still some cards you might like for Yedora specifically:

Burnished Hart and Dawntreader Elk are cards similar to Sakura-Tribe Elder. They cost a little more mana to use, but the synergy with your commander seems super worth-it.

The synergy between such cards and your commander become even when you include ways to bounce your own lands. Here are the ones I found:

Khalni Gem and Kazandu Stomper have it as a cost, so you need to do it if you want to use them. They have a rather high MV. I'm not too sure about them, but still wanted you to see them.

Storm Cauldron is a stax piece, so your playgroup might not enjoy it. It'll still pretty powerful here.

Nissa's Zendikon and Vastwood Zendikon are a lot of fun. See this land that was a creature? Now it's a another creature. You want to kill it? Sure, but now I have my creature back.

Slab Hammer is a nice way to turn a land bounce into damage.

Multani, Yavimaya's Avatar is a gigantic beatstick with a recursion ability that, with Yedora, grants you value to grant you more value.

Guildless Commons is pretty self-explanatory.

As you're also playing Quirion Ranger, Scryb Ranger is basically a second copy of it.

Finally, have you considered some sacrifice outlets? This would allow you to save your creatures from spot removal that exiles them. Birthing Pod is expensive, but Momentous Fall, Greater Good and Evolutionary Leap provide some serious value.

Whatcha think?

king-saproling: Thanks for the comment! Slab Hammer looks super-fun. Expedition Map should rather be any other land, as that would be a better draw even when I'm in topdeck-mode. I don't understand what I'd need Scrapyard Recombiner for. Would you mind to elaborate?

I haven't seen Soul of Windgrace yet, so these suggestions are a little generic, but Quietus Spike eats life totals and Vorpal Sword makes life totals irrelevant.

If there's a landfall theme, Slab Hammer and Sword of the Animist can help keep that rolling, and Strata Scythe wants lots of lands.

I had not noticed the "main phase" part, sorry. The Slab Hammer would still be viable though, as it bounces a land that you can then play in your second main phase.

Rapacious One maybe? The tokens could create mana or attack as 1/1's, 2/1's etc with the boss ability.
