MtG in Halifax

Hey T/O,

I'm moving to Halifax, NS, in the fall for university. Sadly, I will have to leave my local play group.

It's a bigger place than home, so I imagine there must be an established community already. Anyone here go to Dalhousie and know if there is an MtG club there?

I play standard, modern, and commander, so I'll fit in with any crowd (lets be real...studends can't afford legacy unless it's proxied).

Hope I find some people. See you in the fall, Halifax!

May I just be one of the first to say welcome to Halifax! Although, it's early, I figure I should get it in early, since chances are good you'll meet up with me in person sooner or later.

I'm from Halifax myself, and we have four major Magic stores here. In Dartmouth (I know, I said Halifax - it's the city across the harbour), we have Giant Robot Comics. Darryl is the name of the store owner, is a good guy, though his singles are usually a little pricey as he goes by StarCityGames pricing. Personally, I don't go, but that's because I very rarely have Friday's off. On top of that, to my knowledge, he does not have events or space to play any other time of the week. He's not too knowledgeable on cards, but he's friendly - his specialty is more comics and toys.

We also have Monster Comic Lounge which to my knowledge doesn't do Legacy anymore. Used to be the place to go for Legacy, but they have one of the best back selections of cards in the city. If they don't have what you're looking for, there's usually one other spot in the city that has it. They tend to go on their own prices, but the store owners know their stuff. They also sell (surprise!) comics too.

Now to my two favourite stores in the city: Games People Play which supports all formats that you play, as well as The Deck Box. Both of these are in the main downtown area, where Dal is located. Deck Box has Commander days for Thursday and Sunday, while Games People Play has it on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Both have Modern events, and I know both hold a Standard event on Friday. Every once in a while, the Deck Box actually holds a 2 Headed Giant EDH competition, which the winners get $50 apiece. Both have Modern and Standard events, and both have very knowledgeable staff working at both of them. As for prices, GRC goes by TCG Mid converted to Canadian, and DeckBox uses FaceToFaceGames prices. That being said, DeckBox has two stores - so he also has a wide amount of stock at his fingertips too.

Now, as it comes to proxies, for the most part, we're pretty cool about it, so long as you're actively working on getting them, or you have them in testing. The other exception is if you own the card already and want to use it in another deck. While some of us (myself included) have shelled out big for our decks, there are some of us who are more casual, and some of us who have started playing cEDH - or Competitive EDH. You'll realize which ones of us are which pretty quickly - and if not, no worries. We're not hard asses, but we do like tuning. We have no issues in discussing brews and brew ideas.

And for some bad news: Dal used to have a Magic club before Steve Foster (the guy who ran it) sold his collection off. It no longer exists, and I'm sad to say I never got a chance to go to it. However, you will definitely find people who are in our Magic community here in Halifax who end up going there, so you will have a chance to talk to people. Since the Student Union Building (lovingly called the SUB by all) was under construction, and there was no longer a spot for it.

Okay, so that about sums up Halifax's Magic Community for the most part. We're a pretty open group, don't mind new members, and only dislike those who judge us before hand. And because I'm part of this community, I'm pleased to inform you that you'll likely see me around once or twice, haha. No doubt you're going to be asking yourself how to tell it's me? I'm that odd guy who runs Jarad, Azami, and Grenzo as his Commanders. I play no other formats, except the rare draft here and there, but I think and breath Commander for the most part. I'll give you my real name when we meet up - and of course, I expect the same from you. ;) Aside from that, you'll find we're an odd mix, but we all get along so well...

Oh yeah, and don't mind the salt - we have one player in the community who's completely on tilt 85% of the time, and is constantly salty as hell. If you're used to salt, you've not seen the levels this kid puts out. But he's the only one we tease about it. Otherwise, enjoy your stay in our city, and hope you can focus on your education while you're here. If you have any more questions, I can try to answer them the best I can. Either reply here, or on my page, and I'll reply once I'm awake. (I work overnights presently, so I'm not on day hours.) Other then that - come out and play!

Were I from Halifax, I'd join you as well. But cheers to another Canadian planeswalker

Wow, thanks for the awesome info! I'll actually be in town this weekend getting myself acquainted with the area (been a couple years since I've been down that way) and with the university. My Sunday is looking mostly free if you want to get together for some games later in the afternoon (I know the night shift struggle all too well).

Salt is a non-issue. The community in Ottawa is great, and our high level players are always awesome, but there are inevitably those few people who just can't stand losing to Delver. Lol.

EDH is a format I'm still only getting into. My main struggle is finding a commander I really like. I've tried a few, but control in edh is so different from modern or standard. It's forcing me to change my style (sort of...I'm currently on Keranos, and working on Nekusar) which is good. As long as the cEDH group doesn't mind quite a few proxies (student struggles) I'd totally be down to join them, and eventually have a complete deck in time.

Canadian planeswalkers are the best!

Afraid not - I work myself overnights from Thursday to Sunday nights. If I could, I'd make it down, but I'm afraid not possible. You'll likely meet my cronies friends though. I'm trying to get my boss to accommodate a Wednesday to Friday off schedule, but we'll see what happens. You'll for sure find a few people for Sunday at Deckbox though, people I know and fully support. So you should still have a fun time without me. ;) Like I said, expect me more on Wednesdays, at least until I can move to Halifax from Darkside (the running name for Dartmouth).

Glad to hear salt won't be an issue. Figured I'd warn you, since he's known in the land for being quite a special cookie - and not in the best of ways.

As someone who lives and breathes Commander (and cEDH), we have a few students in our group, and have always welcomed proxies, within reason. For example, I'd love to run Timetwister one day for Azami - until then, I'm running Memory Jar which I'm working on finding a real one. However, during testing, I'm using the proxy Memory Jar, and will drop it or improve it as I need to. But yeah, if you're willing to proxy and update over time, we're perfectly okay with that. It's how we make our changes to our decks too.
