My questions are:

is it free to play.(I know you need to pay to do event but if I dont do event will I need to pay)?

What is the best cheap format to invest in?

Thanks for any answers! (I am very familiar with magic and I am primarily a limited player)

cocochannel Ten bucks to start plus money for cards. I have never used it so don't know the answer to question 2.

I'm pretty sure they started doing Pauper Daily Events again, so that is probably the best cheap format to invest in. You need to pay for your cards and any events with prize support; however, you can play with random people or in casual rooms for free.

Also, the 10$ to start up will provide you with 5 tickets as well as 20 new player points, this is enough to play the new player drafts a couple times and begin to build your collection, but you will still need to put a little money into it eventually, I personally have only been on MTGO for about a month now, but I am playing often, and think it is definitely a viable investment.

I don't recommend it. It's $10 to start up and you get some new player points and tickets, which allow you to do "Phantom Drafts" which is a 4 person 2 round draft, but you don't get to keep the cards. You will have to pay money to do any events where you keep the cards. It's nice to use if you want to practice drafting, but other than that, it's a waste of money IMO. Unless you really like to play magic, but never have the time to go somewhere and play with people IRL, but if that's the case then you might as well just get Cockatrice , it's free, you can do drafts, and play any format you like. I use it mainly for deck testing before FNM.
