Shards of EDH

My playgroup and I are in the process of developing a game type revolving around allying your decks to one of the 10 shards (and wedges) of colors, and participating in a season (month or so) where you attempt to earn points for your shards. We are limiting each member to 4 decks and the shard that you declare your deck's allegiance to, must contain the colors of your deck and will be for the entire season. For example, If I had a R/G deck, I could declare that my deck would play for Jund, Naya, or Temur. Points are accrued through wins. Pretty simple. 1 win = 1 point for your faction or shard.

There can be multiple decks in each shard of color, however, the only deck that gets the points contributing to their overall score is the top deck in each shard. -This is done through a duel which can only be done by decks in the same shard and is a best 2 out of 3 series.

At the end of the season, the points are added up and the winner takes a few packs that we all go in on at the beginning. We were also discussing the winner getting a bonus in the next season as well such as, starting with 5 additional life, or always going first, etc. We also discussed having the champ of the previous season be able to lose their bonus to another player if they are "usurped" where the challenger has to defeat all of the champ's decks without a loss.

The only way points can be taken away from a shard is through a challenge. A challenge is a 1 game series between the top 2 decks of their respective shards. the winner takes a point from the losing shard. If you have a deck in a shard that is not a top deck you can't challenge another shard.

In normal multiplayer games, the deck that emerges victorious contributes a point to his shard. Games become more political, but also more cutthroat.

Fortunately most of our decks are fairly similar in strength so there isn't too much disparity when it comes to points. I believe it's a simple way to add some variety to EDH and make it more fun! We are still trying to flesh it out so any suggestions or recommendations are welcome!

The way we select which deck goes where is through the philosophies of each shard. For Example:

(WUG)Bant- Order, Kinship, Honor

(BRU)Grixis- Death, Decay, Destruction

(UBW)Esper- Self advancement, Control, Artifact

(GBR)Jund- Survival of the fittest, Tyranical, Sacrifice

(WRG)Naya- Loyalty, Power, Reverence

(RUG)Temur- Discovery, Evolution, Modify and perfect

(BUG)Sultai- Cunning, Betrayal, Manipulation

(BGW)Mardu- Aggression, Passion, Conflict, Anarchy

(BGW)Abzan- Life and Death, Endurance, Imortality

(RUW)Jeskai- Political, Focus, Freedom

Again, this is just the idea phase so we are still trying to work out the kinks. Let me know what you guys think!

That is, if nothing else, an excellent chart. Mind if I repost it in the MTGUK Facebook group?
