The cube's name is"Budget Cube for Commander Drafting up to 12 People"

Short description:The idea of this cube is to make a pool of cards from which up to 10-12 people can draft from and build a commander deck and compete. Only one copy of any card, except for lands and some few creature and artifact mana accelarators. Thoose are represented with a full playset. This cube contains commander limited cards if you like them you can also draft this cube and play your personal limited format. What do you think about it and what can be improved? :)This is the link

So quick rules questions:

1) are you planning on enforcing the commander's color identity rule?

2) are you planning on drafting the commander separately from other cards or with them all together?

3) are you planning on keeping the 100 cards deck size?

The reason I ask is because I've tried making a cube-commander format before, and I concluded that all three of these makes drafing a functional commander deck too hard. The color identity rule in particular is troublesome for draft, and the 100 card rule makes it practically impossible to obey the color identity rule and draft mono.

Hi Egann:)Thanks for responding:) Good you mention what obstacles there are, but i know for sure that there somehow i a way to make this work we havent figured out yet how or how to twitch the rules. Have you come up with any solutions to some of youre mentioned obstacles? If so please let me know:)I still think that drafting from a cube is the best way to go to make commander competetive. Rules and stuff have to be thought out and i can here you have given it a lot of thought allready. But the rules still need to be made. So the major points that need to thought through are 1)commander's color identity rule, maybe can be circumvented by selecting multicoloured commanders for the special pool?2)Commander selection, seperate pool?3)Deck size, hmm i dont know yet, but that this doesnt incite for monodeck play is an issue. Maybe it can be circumvented by special drafting rules? Thanks again for the response:)

I had to do A LOT. For starters we're talking seven boosters per player, not three. To make color identity or mono work, you need to have a trade step, too. What I wound up with at the end was seeding every booster with 1 or 2 commanders. It looks something like this:

Booster 1: seed 0

Booster 2: seed 1

Booster 3: seed 2

Trade step 1

Booster 4: seed 2

Booster 5: seed 2

Trade step 2

Booster 6: seed 1

Booster 7: seed 1

THIS APPROACH IS FAR TOO TIME CONSUMING AND IS ESSENTIALLY UNPLAYABLE. No, seriously. My playtest didn't even get past booster 4 in two hours. It's a nightmare to draft enough cards for a 100 card deck.

Currently, I'm looking at dropping the color-identity rules and using both draft and sealed boosters, where you get three or four sealed boosters to start, and have to draft or trade to finish the deck. This approach still has problems, but I think it will actually work.

Hi Egann and killroy726:) Thanks for posting. I took your suggestions into account. So i could understand that single drafting for commkander is near impossible and the same goes for preparing and sleeving that much of cards. Therefor i thought about making a digital draft. In addition i think that the problem of people not being able to play mono decks can be solved by drafting boosters in different stages from different pools. I made a rule set, you are very welcomed to check it out and give feedback. Its still a draft and open to changes. Essentially the same rules can be applied for a tiny competetivge draft. But then deck and card number need to be adjusted in the thge respective pools. The good thing this method also allows for people to choose other cubes then the ones mentioned in the rules if they like to. I am looking forward to hear waht you think:)The link to the rule book is here

So a draft for the rules is as follows:

Rulebook for competetive Commander Drafting

**

Gameplay rules

1.The same rules for the EDH/Commander format do apply for gameplay1.1 Every deck contains 100 cards and only one copy of any card is legal in each deck1.2 Each deck has a declared commander1.0.1 Exceptions1.0.2 A 15 card sideboard is legal and participants are allowed to adjust their deck in between matches.

Drafting Rules

As to ensure a smooth drafting experience, drafting takes place in digital form and by drafting a 15 card booster. Boosters are drafted from specifically balenced card pools/cubes for EDH gameplay.

There are overall 4 different pool types 1:Legendary Pool, ; 2:multicoloured pool; 3:mono colured pool; 4:Tribal Pool.

The monocoloured pool is further subdivided into 6 distinctive monocoloured pools, i.e. White, Black, Red, Blue, Green and Tron. Both the monocoloured cubes and tribal cubes contain the same named cards from the multicoloured pool respectively for their colour or tribe, plus additional 0.35 times that many external colour/tribal specifik cards that are exclusive for their pool.

Drafting is devided into three stages.

I) Initial draft. Each participants drafts one a 15 card booster from the legendary pool and three boosters from the multicoloured pool.

2) Tier drafting. After the initial draft, participants can select from which pool to choose a booster next. Boosters can be drafted from the mono-, multicoloured, and tribal cubes. However, it is not legal to draft a booster from the legendary pool after the initial draft stage. In between each tier iteration it is legeal to switch pool types. There are 10 tier iterations, this means participant will recieve 10 boosters from their cube of liking. The tier stage is time constrained. A tier lasts 2 minutes and participants need to choos their cube for the next tier within that time. Each participant will recieve 13 boosters a total of 195 cards from which he has to choose his 100 card deck and 15 card sideboard.

The boosters are distributed as follows: From the initial stage and mandatory 1xlegendary boosters, 2xmulticoloured boosters, 10xBoosters of choice, selected from all cubes (except for the legendary cube). When a participant drafts a digital booster a digital copy is taken(print screen and stored) and a printed spoiler sheet will be handed out to her/him. It is legal to take written notes during drafting on a handed out sheet of paper. It is not legal to take notes on the physical spoiler sheet, since it is reserved for declaring card selection.

3) Deck declaration state, this stage lasts 10 minutes. Within that time participants need to declare their deck and sideboard. Cards are declared by marking them visually with a cross(or something?) on the printed spoiler handouts. After cards are declared, a digital photo will be taken of each spoiler sheet and stored digitally.

Finally, the individually constructed 100 card deck plus 15 card sideboard will be handed out to each participant.

What do you think abou the rules? Thanks again:)
