Experimental —Sept. 23, 2017

I've decided to reevaluate just what the purpose of this deck is supposed to be. I wanna try a fresh approach and decided to make the following changes...

ADDED // REMOVED

  • Tezzeret the Seeker // Search for Azcanta
  • Mystic Remora // Venser, Shaper Savant
  • Oath of Jace // Lavinia of the Tenth
  • Panharmonicon // Long-Term Plans
  • Soul Tithe // Riftwing Cloudskate
  • Prophetic Prism // Spine of Ish Sah
  • Sun Titan // Stonehorn Dignitary
  • Ichor Wellspring // Recruiter of the Guard
  • Mycosynth Wellspring // Knight of the White Orchid

These changes aim to reach the following results:

1) Graveyard Recursion and Carddraw with Discard:

I have had very few Graveyard recursion in this deck, and adding Sun-Titan will enable me to do so, allowing me to access cards like Search for Azcanta or Oath of Jace without that much guilt attached to it. This deck had a lack of value in card-draw prior and I hope to fix it with this.

2) Removing Venser and the Riftwing

I really liked playing these cards, but I removed them for the sake of Sun-Titan synergy. Instead I brought back Soul Tithe (which is fairly close to a bounce, considering the owner of the card will have to pay echo costs if he wants to keep the card. If he choses not to, the card is gone!gone and won't still linger on the opponent's hand, and to me it's not that much of a loss because it adds one more card to synergize with Sun-Titan.

3) Removing Djeru and Recruiter of the Guard

I really like Djeru, I do - but the Planeswalkers in this deck are not as important as my playgroup makes them out to be. They are a fun gimmik because Brago can enable them to do their thing twice - but they are no actual win-condition, because using them twice, means they will never properly tick up for emblems until I can secure them with a bunch of tokens from Elspeth or Oath of Gideon or a couple of control-based shenanigans. Furthermore, with the Release of Ixalan, the new "legendary" Planeswalker rule will apply, and if I want to tutor for a specific planeswalker then Search for Azcanta will do that same job just fine As with Djeru, I do love the Recruiter and I am glad that after so long I have gained a hold of him, but as it is with these changes, he simply has too little targets left to fetch and most of them weren't really going to get me out of a pickle. What I'm trying to do INSTEAD now, is secure myself some more general card-draw, to possibly also draw into a couple of lands, counterspells or O-Rings. As nice as tutoring is, sometimes simply having a bit of value in a solid handsize is hopefully going to shift certain situations into my favor.

4) Generally reducing the Mana Curve a bit

As nice as cards such as Lavinia or the Spine are, I am looking for another way to deal with things. Soul-Tithe can at times be just as efficient than the Spine and in contrast will both come faster and allow me to save up on some Mana for potential counterspells (or bluffs thereof), whereas readding the Mystic Ramora should slow the game down a bit in my favor.

5) Tezzeret and the Search (Update 8. Oct)

The Search is a nifty card that I am fairly sure will work well in Modern, but the couple of times I got to test it here, it was too little too late and flipping it was still harder than excpected. When I began to plan including a Tezzeret it wasn't too hard to find a slot for him. Tezzeret is a multi-purpose toolkit planeswalker in this deck as the ratio of articats nearly doubled to prior builds. His tutor ability will most always first fetch some boots or greaves for Brago and in the second main either help to untap mana artifacts or keep tutoring for stuff like the Wellsprings, depending on how save the board is.
