Hi.

I was introduced by a friend to this game around RTR, but I rarely played until around DOM. Since then I've become much more invested into the game and am the player you see now.

My very first decks (built with the help of friends) were fliers, mill, and later illusion tribal.

Like many players, I started with casual kitchen table Magic, and over time became exposed to competitive Magic. I first became a Legacy enthusiast, then a short while later started with Modern.

Nowadays I keep at least a cursory eye on 60 card constructed and play some limited when time and circumstance permit.

Feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat about anything, Magic related or otherwise.

In Legacy, I was a miracles player, and the deck remains my conceptual favorite. However, I no longer follow Legacy actively due to format developments since WAR.

I originally started Modern by playing Eldrazi D&T. Since then I've transitioned into playing spirits, which currently serves as my primary "competitive" Modern deck.

I've also adapted my old Legacy miracles deck into Modern, and I also loosely maintain a Ponza deck for funsies.

Since Pioneer's inception I've gone through multiple different deck ideas trying to have a change of pace, but have ultimately settled on good old control.

If you're specifically looking for mana after bouncing a creature (via Treasure token or whatever), there's Depths of Desire.

If you want any benefit in general, there's stuff like Fading Hope, Brazen Borrower (you get the creature on adventure), Baral's Expertise, Absorb Identity, etc. Just search Scryfall for cards with "return" and "creature" in their text.

For a kitchen table deck you usually just want some way to remove opposing creatures. Path to Exile was the classic Modern staple for , nowadays people usually prefer stuff like Prismatic Ending or Solitude but Path is still good.

Unfortunately, angels are not a very competitive Modern tribe since they're usually big inefficient creatures, and the more efficient angels are probably out of your budget range, e.g. Resplendent Angel. But for casual play this doesn't really matter, just try to focus on creatures that do something useful (draw a card, gain life, etc) while also having decent offensive stats, and maximize your copies of them. So for example, Inspiring Overseer isn't too bad since it's a 2 power flier while gaining 1 life and replacing itself, so 4 copies of it is probably a good idea.

Some quick pointers:

  • If your budget is €20, don't bother with multiple colors. Stick to mono , that will relieve all budget pressure on your manabase. You could even run a few utility lands like Seraph Sanctuary without much trouble if you stuck to mono .
  • Keep your deck to 60 cards. Consistency is the name of the game, fewer cards in deck = more chances to see cards you want to see.
  • Try to figure out what your best cards are and run 4x copies of them. A lot of random one-ofs is generally not great, again consistency is key, you want to see your best cards as often as possible.
  • For a casual kitchen table deck I'd probably go for 4x interaction spells (I think you can get Path to Exile for less than < €1 right now) and the rest creatures and lands. Wouldn't bother with those random enchantments or sorceries, they dilute your gameplan of beating face while gaining lots of life.

Best of luck with the deck!
