Do Afterlife triggers double with Teysa Karlov on board?

Asked by Snivy__ 5 years ago

I've been playing around with a Teysa Karlov standard deck, and someone told me that Afterlife triggers don't double with Teysa on board because the creature won't be on the field when death triggers. Is this true?

Also, let's say I have a Rekindling Phoenix in the graveyard, one in play, and Teysa in play. If my one in play dies, would I get two tokens? Would I be able to return the previously dead Phoenix with the second token generated by the first one dying?

Teysa Karlov is meant to work with the Afterlife mechanic.

Afterlife and similar abilities are "triggered abilities of permanents you control" (which is what Teysa is looking for), and they are triggered by creatures dying (also what Teysa is looking for). This means they qualify for her first ability, and are triggered an additional time. Because the creature with Afterlife is no longer on the board, Last Known Information comes into play (referring back to when it was a permanent on the board).

Rekindling Phoenix would get you two tokens with Teysa in play because its ability is on a permanent you control and triggers when a creature dies. The tokens say "target card named Rekindling Phoenix," so you could use one of the tokens to return your other Rekindling Phoenix to the battlefield when it dies. The tokens aren't tied to specific instances of the card.

I have gone ahead and marked Kogarashi's answer as accepted. If you could please do this yourself next time, that would be appreciated.
