What is your favorite combo in EDH?

Commander (EDH) forum

This is a post for people to describe their favorite combos for EDH! There are many of them, so please don't list ones other players have listed.

Also, while many combos win the game, like Demonic Consultation and Thassa's Oracle, but a cool user on another question I asked (FormOverFunction) showed me a card I didn't remember or know existed, Artificer's Hex, which I figured pretty fast would combo with Bloodthirsty Blade, to kill a creature each turn. Sure, it doesn't win the game, but it still is a fun and cool combo!

What are your favorites?

Y’all ready for this hot take?
Cataclysmic Gearhulk + Portcullis

You play Portcullis to soft-lock future creatures. You play Cataclysmic Gearhulk to get everyone down to 1 creature. Because you likely play the gearhulk into a less than empty board, Portcullis triggers and you now have a gearhulk inside the portcullis. So whenever Portcullis gets removed, any and all creatures stored inside it will get insta-wiped by Cataclysmic Gearhulk. It’s a wrath + insurance policy.

Told’ja it’d be spicy.

Crypt Rats equipped with Scythe of the Wretched. What happens: you nuke the board with the rat's ability (it needs to die asweel) and stack the triggers of the scythe in a way, that your rats receive the scythe as the last creature. Rinse and repeat for as much mana as you have. Throw in Blood Vassal to get some back during your lööps.

Omniscience_is_life so am I correct in that Cacophodon equipped with Darksteel Plate is used with Power of Fire enchanting any of the untap payoffs?

CaptainToll You got it! :)

I can explain any combos that don’t make any sense, but I trust you guys understand ‘em for the most part

Reveillark and friends combo. Not the most efficient combo, but it can be put fully into play via Boonweaver Giant or Protean Hulk and has enough redundancy that it is pretty hard to completely stop.

Arcbond+Reiterate

Lets say there are five 6/6's on the board. You deal 1 damage to 1, and it deals 1 damage to each creature and player. Then each of the others deal 1 damage to each creature and player. Then each deal 5 damage to each creature and player. Congratulations, each player has been dealt 36 damage and everythings dead. It gets worse the more creatures are on the board.

My favorite is once I did it after having 20 Locust god tokens and a Keranos, which could keep reverberating damage after the last wave died.

Pact of the Titan + Djinn Illuminatus + Burst of Speed

Its a fairly straightforward combo, but I love how suicidal it is. Either you win with an army of hasty 4/4's, or you die to nearly infinite triggers you can't pay when your turn comes back around.

Melek, Izzet Paragon with Proteus Staff

Melek is the only card in your deck, and is currently in play. Maybe he's your commander? Use Proteus Staff on him. You reveal cards from the top and lo and behold, the only creature is Melek, already on the bottom. What happens next? Put the revealed cards back in any order. Now you have a stacked deck, and you get to cast the top card with Melek's ability.

Useful to stack it with a bunch of red mana gaining spells, High Tide, untapping spells for mana rocks and lands, and end it with a Comet Storm.

Some fun combos that can be a little janky:

Damage and life-gain combo

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Thornbite Staff + Sling-Gang Lieutenant. Tap Kiki with thornbite equipped to make copies of Lieutenant, sacrifice the tokens to untap with Thornbite, repeat for a damage and life-gain combo.

The same basic combo can be done in four parts using Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker + Thornbite Staff + token producer + sac outlet such as Skirk Prospector or Goblin Bombardment

Infinite reanimation (during upkeep)= Hell's Caretaker + Thornbite Staff + Genesis Chamber/Desecrated Tomb (or a reanimation target that ETBs with fodder such as Myr Battlesphere) + Initial Sac Fodder

Thanks for the kind words, man. I love having Xenic Poltergeist get revenge on a sweeper-casting player by turning his prize artifact (and likely combo piece) into a creature before the wrath effect resolves. Not a combo per se, but old cards catch people off guard and I love it. Similarly, having something like Copper Tablet or Thought Prison force an “I-go-infinite” player to walk through his win step-by-step only to find that he can’t kill that last player before he dies.

Solid. Gold.

I can’t stop laughing, because I also just remembered another non-bo:

burning down a blinged-out Extraplanar Lens/Thawing Glaciers/Snow-Covered Island deck with a Cold Snap. Saved the day for the table.

I strongly recommend going through all of the old cards, everyone.

This combo requires timing but it's my combo.

Vicious Shadows

Then

Blasphemous Act

You can add Mirage Mirror to make it more potent

Right now its a cross between [Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite] + [Dovescape] + [Godhead of Awe] and [Exquisite Blood] + [Fractured Identity] + [Tainted Remedy].

spoonieluv1023 ya might need two brackets on each side of a card name to link to it ;)

Omniscience_is_life, yeah hadnt been on here in a while and forgot it was double bracket lol.

Reposting to tag the cards.

Is all of them an acceptable answer? Because I have never met a 3 or less card combo I didn't love. I even love some Rube Goldberg-esque combos that have silly amounts of moving pieces. If I have to name some specifically:

Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond

Ashnod's Altar + Sword of the Meek + Thopter Foundry

Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons + Blowfly Infestation + Blood Artist

Not as deadly as the other mentions, but I love Sylvan Library and Abundance. The latter provides a replacement effect so you basically “draw” 3 land or nonland cards on each of your turns. It always makes so happy.

I like all the Splinter Twin and Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker type combos.

I had a rakdos deck with greven as the general with a bunch of ways to make great use of those cards.

The first few years of playing more competitive EDH, my LGS implemented a maximum 3 iterations of any infinite combo during league matches played for prize pools, so to semi-circumvent this and ensure my combo would win the game without truly being infinite, I became very fond of Necrotic Ooze + Phyrexian Devourer + Triskelion or Walking Ballista, since it is limited to the CMC of your library. Total CMC of the deck was just under 200, so it was always good to kill three other players instantly. Still holds a special place for me.

Otherwise I’m with Gidgetimer...all of them!

One of my favorite combinations is to cast Primal Command while controlling Riku of Two Reflections, choosing the search for a creature mode (the other mode is irrelevant) and then copying it to find Bloodwater Entity and Coiling Oracle. I then cast the Bloodwater Entity to put the Primal Command atop of my library, and cast Coiling Oracle to put it directly into my hand (and, if I have sufficient mana to do so, I copy both creatures, meaning that I can recover two instants and/or sorceries).

I usually shy away from anything really oppressive or infinite, mostly due to playgroup. HOWEVER, I have been known Enchanted Evening + Opalescence from time to time...
