I've been thinking about building a RW hatebears list for a while, but until recently I didn't think it'd be strong enough to have any real game. However, with the spoiling of Amonkhet, a new card has arisen that might actually make this deck a reality. That card is Harsh Mentor.

Boros Hatebears is a midrange deck that focuses on playing high value creatures such as Thalia, Guardian of Thraben and Blade Splicer in addition to some of the free-win red cards in the beginning of the game, and closes the game with Restoration Angel and Pia and Kiran Nalaar. Our deck is also supposed to answer many of the popular cards in the format, as a turn 1 thalia backed up by a turn 2 Harsh Mentor can just hate players out of the game.

(This list will be changes as I playtest with things, I'll change the primer once I know changes are final.

Sacred Foundry: The RW shockland, foundry ensures that our colors are fixed so we can cast spells without any problems.

Ghost Quarter: Deals with problems like tron lands, Inkmoth Nexus, any any other land you want to destroy. Also, since we play both Leonin Arbiter and Aven Mindcensor in our maindeck, we can easily manascrew opponents who don't run many basics.

Gemstone Caverns: Allows us to get a turn 1 Chalice of the Void or Thalia, Guardian of Thraben.

Inspiring Vantage: A kaladesh fastland that helps us get the mana we need on our more important turns.

Plains: We run 8 so we have good mana with Blood Moon cards out.

Mountain: Great if we need it.

Aether Vial: Vial allows us to cheat out our creatures without having to deal with counterspells, and works very well with cards like Flickerwisp .

Harsh Mentor: Harsh Mentor has game against the vast majority of decks in modern, as fetchlands, manlands, and a whole variety of cards all trigger this cards effect. Mentor allows this deck to be extremely aggressive and sometimes wins games against decks like Lantern Control.

Thalia, Guardian of Thraben: The face of hatebears, Thalia allows us to setback our opponent's plays, giving us time to set up. In additon, sicne she has First strike, she has game against most of the format's early game creatures, such as Goblin Guide and an unlfipped Delver of Secrets  .

Leonin Arbiter: This card is well known to screw many decks in the format over, since the vast majority of decks in modern use search in the form of fetchlands, Sylvan Scrying, Chord of Calling, you name it, Leonin probably hates it. Arbiter can also turn Ghost Quarter into Strip Mine.

Journey to Nowhere: Since we run Chalice of the Void we don't want turn turn off our own removal in the process.

Eidolon of the Great Revel: a 2 drop that can actually win games by itself, Eidolan enables us to deal lots of damage to decks like affinity and elves, as well as burn and death's shadow.

enter image description here

Blood Moon: Since a great deal of decks in modern run greedy manabases with non-basic lands, blood moon punishes many decks in the format, and sometimes just wins games against certain decks. This lock-piece really shines in many matchups.

Magus of the Moon: The hatebear blood moon, magus is gives us more opportunities to lock out players, while beating down as a bear at the same time. (Also can come down turn 3 after a turn 2 thalia, which can be important to keep tempo.)

Flickerwisp : An amazing 3/1 flyer, wisp is extremely destructive when cheated into play with vial.

Blade Splicer : A 3/3 first strike outclasses most of the aggro creatures in the format, and with blink effects like resto and wisp, we can get an army of them.

Pia and Kiran Nalaar: A midrange creature, Pia and Kiran easily allows us to stabilize the board against a more aggressive deck, and is great when blinked.

Restoration Angel: Another high value threat, Resto is fully capable of killing planeswalkers, and ending games by itself.

Our sideboard makes us look a lot like the RW control deck known as Sun & Moon, and it's pretty powerful.

Grafdigger's Cage: A one mana hatecard for dredge and any deck that would like to reanimate their things besides Living End, since they exile their graveyard. I suppose it also works against any deck that wants to cheat something from their library as well.

Rest in Peace: This graveyard hoser can just give us free wins against decks like living end and dredge if they don't have answer to it.

Stony Silence: Hate for affinity, lantern control, and any other artifact based strategy, stony silence can give us free wins against artifact based strategies since we turn off their deck once we play it.

Wear: Wear comes in against decks like bogles, Affinity, etc, as well as any deck that decides it wants to run cards like Ensnaring Bridge.

Kor Firewalker : Burn is very relevent in the modern meta, and kor firewalker is the best hatecard we could hope for in order to beat them. Firewalker can also come in just to gain us life since we play a lot of red cards.

Chalice of the Void: Chalice is one of the few cards in modern that keeps other decks in line, because if you play this turn 1 against bogles, they likely have no answer to it. In fact, the vast majority of decks in modern can be hated out quite well with Chalice. I do understand that we also play 1 drops, so it is a double edged sword for sure, but in the matchups we use it in, I think it's worth it.

Leyline of Sanctity: Brought in against decks like burn and combo,as well as discard heavy lists, Leyline can actually stop entire decks from working, or slow burn down enough to where we can beat them.

This deck is still a work in progress, if you could give me suggestions or an upvote, that would be wonderful!
