Nalia Top Deck Party (Orzhov Topdeck)

Commander / EDH Mill Party Scry Storm Top Deck Matters WB (Orzhov)

The goal of this deck is to take full advantage of Nalia's top-deck ability. Most top-deck manipulation cards are in blue and green so this deck was fun to try and recreate this strategy in Orzhov.

Top deck manipulation cards include cheap artifacts like Codex Shredder, Ghoulcaller's Bell, Wand of Vertebrae, Millikin, and Sensei's Divining Top to easily and repeatedly manipulate the top card of your deck. We also run a good amount of scry and surveil cards (Viscera Seer, Rumor Gatherer, Gandalf, White Rider, and Doom Whisperer) and other powerful top-deck cards, including cards with great payoff like Syr Konrad, the Grim and others that can allow us to look at the top card of the deck when Nalia is not on the battlefield like Verge Rangers, and Bolas's Citadel which have great payoffs.

On top of all of the top deck manipulation, we have filled our deck with many cards which allow us shuffle at a moment’s notice, thus changing the top card of our deck. These include, Arid Mesa, Demolition Field, Esper Panorama, Evolving Wilds, Fabled Passage, Marsh Flats, Myriad Landscape, Prismatic Vista, Urza's Saga, Verdant Catacombs, Windswept Heath, Land Tax, and Weathered Wayfarer.

The other great way to manipulate the top card of your library is to simply draw cards. This deck has 12 cards that allow you to draw cards including the three “Bob” cards (Dark Confidant, Keen Duelist, and Twilight Prophet), as well as other cards like Black Market Connections, Necropotence, and Species Specialist, among others. As many of the draw spells require you to pay life, I found that running Soul Warden and Soul's Attendant were incredibly helpful.

The deck runs 13 clerics, 12 wizards, and 12 warriors, with only 2 rogues including Nalia de'Arnise (Nalia is a rogue so it is much easier to have access to her). On top of this, we run Faceless Haven (with snow-covered basics), Mutavault, Black Market Connections, Mirror Entity, Burakos, Party Leader, and Maskwood Nexus to help us assemble the party consistently.

Party payoffs include cards like Multiclass Baldric, Harper Recruiter, Seasoned Dungeoneer, Squad Commander, Solemn Doomguide, and my two favorites: Coveted Prize and Stick Together.

You typically win by just outvaluing your opponent with a large board, but a couple of cards help the most with this including Mirror Entity, Vito, Thorn of the Dusk Rose, Gandalf, White Rider, Jazal Goldmane, Syr Konrad, the Grim, Bolas's Citadel, and Necropotence.

As with all my decks, it is balanced with ramp and interaction including 12 forms of ramp and 10 forms of targeted removal, and 3 wipes. For the targeted removal, I emphasize creature-based removal to keep the party going. Thus, cards like Space Marine Devastator, Fiend Hunter, Primaris Eliminator, and Grim Hireling (among others) are prioritized over normal removal spells. Likewise, I run Crib Swap which may initially seem weird, but Nalia’s ability also allows you to cast this at instant speed off the top of your library, and it has helped me out many times!

It is amazing how consistent this deck is, and how quickly it can recover after board wipes. I have intentionally opted not to include Imperial Seal or Vampiric Tutor into the deck as it made play very repetitive. These, however, are great includes in even more competitive play groups.

There are a lot of ways you can take the Nalia deck (stax, first strike and deathtouch, combat heavy, etc.); however, I have had a lot of fun leaning heavily into this top deck version. Other cards that allow you to manipulate the top deck in Orzhov are included in the maybeboard. Hope you enjoy!
