Everyday I'm Scuttling... {Post Rotation}

Standard Artifact UR (Izzet)

Sideboard

I've not been a big fan of Standard since I rejoined the game in RTR. Now that its cycling out I feel I can fully start to enjoy the wonderful things that the newer sets have to offer and explore Standard decks that fit my play style. Which usually consists of janky stupid decks that are fun to pilot but not always effective.

So in case you don't know how the deck works let me do a brief breakdown on what a Scuttle-Butt deck is and why its a thing. Sorry for all the puns and bad jokes in advance. I play dirty Magic.

--THE PIECES--

  • Scuttling Doom Engine - A beat stick that does nice things when it dies, so lets make sure it can swing and die properly!

  • Shrapnel Blast - Helps Scuttling Doom Engine die with a... Bang! smh

  • Ensoul Artifact - Turns my artifacts into a giant beat stick that may die with a pretty explosion!

  • Ornithopter - Beat stick with wings!

  • Darksteel Citadel - Indestructible beat stick!

  • Generator Servant - Helps the beat stick beat his stick faster... Wait... Gets the beat stick out faster... That's not much better...

  • Chief Engineer - Same as Servant but not as fast and sometimes he lasts a little longer. In play I mean.

--THE EXTRA'S--

  • Howl of the Horde - Hardly considered an extra at this point, Howl allows me to triple cast Shrapnel Blast or even a very solid Lightning Strike or Magma Spray. But when you get down to it, attacking with Scuttles or an Ensoul'ed artifact then casting Howl followed by Shrap is probably GG.

  • Soul of New Phyrexia - An alternative beat stick, while he doesn't have quite as nice a death as Scuttles, he can hold the fort down.

  • Keranos, God of Storms - Throws some Bolts around and helps me draw out pieces. Usually this thing helps me get the mid-range creatures out of Scuttles way.

  • Lightning Strike - Removal

  • Magma Jet - Removal +Scry!

--SIDEBOARD--

  • Anger of the Gods - Finding a nice place against Rable Red and other aggro decks

  • Negate - Great for when the other has answers for my pieces

  • Phyrexian Revoker - Great for PW's and even decks running Soul's as a 1 of.

  • Polymorphist's Jest - This thing does some work! Great against just about any deck that has dudes in it, and makes sure Scuttles crashes in

  • Void Snare - I'm still on the fence about this card, but I'm thinking it will be useful post rotation and its great against PW's and even mirror match

--CARDS I'M NOT RUNNING--

  • Hammer of Purphoros - A lot of Scuttle decks seem to be running Hammer, and I see why. Tapping Gen Servant the turn it comes out seems good right? Well hopefully you won't have to really. And if you get caught in a situation where you need haste to get there, you probably already lost. Turn 3 I feel like this deck has so much better things to be dropping than the Hammer. This is when you're supposed to be setting up for Scuttles next turn.

  • Illusory Angel - This is a good card through and through. I thought long and hard about running her, she is fantastic. But I don't feel that dropping an Ornithopter before her is going to always be consistent enough to be of value. Now I know what you're saying, you don't have to cast an Ornithoptor, you can drop any creature, right? This deck is consistent 2 drops, she is a 3 drop. That means I need 5 mana. I should be playing Scuttles, NOT this.

  • Scalding Tarn - It's not legal in standard. ONLY reason I'm not running it, OH man I would love to have it in standard with this deck. Lets keep hoping and praying that we get a reprint of the Zendi fetches, right?!

--AND THAT'S ALL FOLKS--

I hope you liked the deck, if you did please +1 and feel free to leave comments and suggestions.

Also, if you're going to argue about having to sac off additional artifacts with Howl, please refer to rule 706.10 which points out that I'm not casting Shrap multiple times. I've already had many of my local competitors say I can't do it and then have them stare at me blankly when I explain how making a copy of something works. So I'm trying to get ahead of the curve on that one.

Had a really good week at FNM.

Round 1 - Rabble Red ate dust. Game one Darksteel Citadel ate his face until Scuttles came in and finished the job. Game 2 Ornithopter ate his face until guess what... Scuttles finished him off.

Round 2 - Played against BUG PW control style. Dude was convinced he could durdle until Kiora, the Crashing Wave started pooping tokens. Little did he know how fast this deck goes off and I got there in 2.

Round 3 - Went the hardest. Game 1 I crashed into him way to quickly and he got the mana screw. Game 2 he gave the screw to me and I got little to nothing going. Game 3 went deep and took us both to 1 life. All I needed was to top deck some sort of burn spell but I was 2 turns away. So sad.

Round 3 - Mono Green Devo... Lets just say the deck is way to good. And I never had a solid start. It hurt. A lot. Knocked me out of the running for top 8 for sure and I went home with the Banishing Light promo as a random.
