wallisface on Sultai Lantern Control

As a long-time lantern player myself, I have some thoughts:

  • your only on-board interaction at the moment is the two copies of Drown in the Loch… this feels severely inadequate for cleaning up the board once your lock is in-place. I would be expecting stuff like Prismatic Ending or Abrupt Decay so you could hit a wider variety of answers, or Fatal Push so you could be more proactive. In any case having only 2 on-board interaction pieces feels too low. Added to that, Lantern never needs countermagic because you’re able to soo easily strip the opponents hand and then control their topdeck.

  • Emry, Lurker of the Loch validates your opponents cards too much imo (i.e it means their killspells aren’t dead-draws, so there’s less garbage they can topdeck). I’d ditch it.

  • In a format as fast as modern, there will be lots of instances where you need to get Ensnaring Bridge online asap. I don’t think Ashiok, Dream Render, being a 3-mana cards, helps with that. It’s a sideboard option at-best.

  • Ego Drain feels incredibly dangerous to yourself as far as limiting your own limited resources. You really need Thoughtseize

  • Scheming Symmetry only feels useful if you’re already ahead/winning. Though there’s possibly a few niche situations where it’s helpful, so maybe its fine.

  • you really need a copy of The Underworld Cookbook to deal with aggro and burn, while also ensuring nothing gets under Ensnaring Bridge.

I predict rakdos scam to transition to dimir scam with cards like Subtlety and Drown in the Loch alongside counterspells transitioning to more of a tempo control deck, which could actually utilize The One Ring if it wanted to.

People will probably try orzhov first, since it is mentioned in the ban announcement specifically, but I see dimir as more powerful and better positioned in the metagame.

Some thoughts:

  • mill decks never want to run any creatures other than Hedron Crab and Ruin Crab. All these other creatures you’re running do nothing to help you mill, and end up being anti-synergies in your deck (you’re unlikely to win through combat damage, and by having these cards you’re just ruining your chances to win by milling either).

  • some of your mill cards are super sub-optimal. For instance Tome Scour is the equivalent of running Shock in a burn deck - both cards too to little to get the job done and just end up leaving you empty-handed while your opponent is still alive. Same goes for Mind Funeral… it does too little for its investment. Better options include Fractured Sanity, Maddening Cacophony, and Tasha's Hideous Laughter.

  • You currently have no form of interaction, which means you’re just going to get stomped on… even the fastest mill decks can’t outpace typical aggro/combo decks, and need to buy themselves time. I would expect to see cards like Fatal Push, Extirpate/Surgical Extraction, Drown in the Loch, and Crypt Incursion here.

Firstly I'd take out Jace's Phantasm as your deck aims to mill not kill. I'd also add Ruin Crab over Hedron Crab if your only going to add one of the Crabs. Although most mill decks add both and play some form of lands similar to Evolving Wilds Some other good adds you should look at are Archive Trap although this one is not budget Fractured Sanity Jace, the Perfected Mind Tasha's Hideous Laughter Drown in the Loch I'd also recommend taking out a few if not all copies of consuming aberation you'll be lucky to get one down let alone multiple copies. Hope this helps

Cool, for a pure mill $50 list I'd be doing something like this (all prices from Card Kingdom):

Comes to $49.95 total.

Both Peppersmoke and Noggin Whack feel really weak - i think you’d be better off using cards like Spell Pierce, Counterspell, Drown in the Loch, or maybe even Subtlety.

I also think Faerie Impostor, Nightshade Stinger, and Oona's Prowler all feel super suboptimal, and it would be better to ditch these to run playsets of your better fairies (paricularly Spellstutter Sprite, as this is the strongest faerie by a long way and pretty-much the only valid reason to run the tribe), as well as some of the above-mentioned cards.

Hey thanks again for your comments on my primer :)

A few suggestions I have:

  1. Replace 2 mana enablers with weak/no abilities (such as Dimir Infiltrator and Gurmag Swiftwing) with 1 mana enablers (like Gudul Lurker) or stronger 2 mana enablers (i.e., Baleful Strix, Augury Owl).

  2. Replace 3 mana ramp (like Basalt Monolith, Dimir Locket) with 2 mana ramp (i.e., Dimir Signet or Talisman of Dominance).

  3. Soft permission spells such as Spell Pierce and Mana Leak are usually weak in budget/lower-powered pods because the games go longer. Some potential replacements could be Misdirection, Drown in the Loch.

  4. Cancel, Murder, Hero's Downfall, Perplex, Connive / Concoct and Rite of Undoing seem quite weak to me. Some budget-friendly cards I like that you might want to play are Curtains' Call, Portent, Far / Away, Discovery / Dispersal, Submerge, and Murderous Cut.

Good luck in your tournament!
