Round 1, Part 2 Results

Your Poor-Man decks are eager to break out of their boxes and prove their worth! Before we get into the thick of it, though, a few words:

It has come to my attention that I may have been a bit hasty in my past write-ups by assigning a male gender to all participants when referring to them in the results. Because Magic is all-inclusive and we love our badass, spell-slingin’ ladies, I’m going to be refraining from using gender-specific pronouns when referring to deck creators. This way, I won’t have to worry about misrepresenting anyone in my articles. And, before you point it out, yes; I see the irony of all this next to the name "Poor-Man Challenge". This’ll all be rectified in the future.

Glad I could clear that up. Onward!

With the conclusion of the first round, I’d like to congratulate those who advanced! Win once more and you’re in the prize support!

At the onset of Round 2, I’ve decided to break up the round into two articles, just as I have for Round 1. I do this to increase the frequency of articles being released as Round 2 has (obviously) half the rounds as Round 1, allowing each article to take half as long to complete. From Round 3 onward, there will only be one article for the each entire round. Look for Round 2 Part 1 sometime next week.

In addition to next week’s typical match results, I’m going to start a running set of statistics to help us analyze the metagame and see the trends that have emerged beyond what I would call "a reasonable amount of variance."

Pairings have been made using the best random number generator on the internet.

Round 2 matches:

Good on you Helldiver18! Some hot Orzhov on Orzhov action.

I'm pretty pleased that my plans went so well, I must admit.

Ostrichman01 says... #2

Congratulations EludeMerlange. May the best deck win

May 11, 2016 7:31 p.m.

clayperce says... #3

Congrats jellowsmurf! You realize now: You gotta go on to win the while thing, right?

Seriously, best of luck in round 2!

And thanks TONS zandl for all the work that goes into this!

May 11, 2016 8 p.m.

Good game Nickick. May you do well in round 2!

@nateblego and Garrus_Vakarian

That first match sounded EPIC

Ostrichman01 Best of luck to you as well

Mortem says... #7

Wow, I'm glad my deck won! They seemed like good games, and Mr.Dr.Professor's deck sounded sweet. Good luck to DominusMine in our next match!

May 11, 2016 10:16 p.m.

taskking says... #8

Congrats to CRKFIEND! I figured i was gonna lose when i saw your deck. Good luck in the next round and I hope win.

Thank you zandl for putting this on. I was trying to run a smaller version of my Gruul/Jund Landfall and Burn deck, but the idea seem to transfer as well as I thought it might.

May 11, 2016 10:32 p.m.

zandl says... #9

Derp. Got some of the names mixed up in your match description, Mortem. That's what I get for rushing through proofreading, I suppose.

Will fix it later.

May 11, 2016 10:45 p.m.

Tsarius says... #10

Mixed up names in game 1 on my round...also, I'd appreciate you not calling me "T"...it sounds distinctly awkward when I read it.

That aside, I'm extremely confused how game two ended up without delirium. As I said in the matchups post, I expected to lose to elves, but not because of my deck not hitting the entire point of said deck.

May 11, 2016 10:58 p.m.

GGs, MaverickGV. It sounds like it was close.

For future reference, I'd suggest playing less spells that do nothing but gain life, such as Prism Ring or Chaplain's Blessing. It all goes back to CABS (cards that affect the board state) theory.

Once again thank you zandl for running this!

zandl says... #14

@Tsarius: According to the game logs which I save, your graveyard had contained 3 card types (enchantment, creature, and land). This was from a Vessel of Nascency. Your Thraben Gargoyle  Flip either needed to die or you needed to rip some fourth type and get it into the graveyard. With 3 types in the bin, though, a reasonable opponent would not force you to block with the artifact creature, granting you an active Tooth Collector and Obsessive Skinner. So they sat as you unfortunately drew lands and more creatures (together, the overwhelming majority of cards you could've seen). In the meantime (the picture from game-2 was only turn-7), the Elf deck constructed that board without needing to swing in, with the Tajuru Warcaller in-hand and building up for a blowout with that.

@DaftVader: Game logs show that your deck ran alright and you did get in for some damage (almost winning game-1, actually, before the Retreats took over), but the game descriptions stuck true to what happened. The removal showed up for Elude (the deck plays 20 different spells to kill your 28, after all) and the Retreat to Hagras staved off the damage of whatever small creatures were left over. I, of all people, appreciate the power of Valeron Wardens, but they never had a chance to trigger for value.

I'll fix the names and a few other minor things I found after work tomorrow, but yeah, you guys.

It's a friendly deck-building challenge that costs nothing to take part in (aside from my patience and time). It's a semi-annual community bonding event that yeaGO donates a boatload of Feature Tokens to.

May 12, 2016 2:49 a.m. Edited.

zandl says... #15

Also, DaftVader, for what it's worth: You were also drawing into Silkwrap and Stasis Snare, 2 less-than-desirable spells against a deck that aims to instantly sacrifice all its own creatures.

May 12, 2016 2:57 a.m.

beakedbard says... #16

I knew I should of taken the Dragon Fodder out but I'd already submitted it alas such is life. Either way gratz Schlatre I wish you luck in the next round. I hope you make more of these zandl I want to try again in the future when it comes and also thanks for setting this all up its been fun to follow thus far and should get more interesting.

May 12, 2016 5:27 a.m.

Nickick says... #17

Thanks DarksteelBadger, I really liked the idea behind your deck when I had a look!

May 12, 2016 8:05 a.m.

Wow... this got published on my birthday... and I got the bye. Awesome birthday present, zandl! XD

Honestly, though, I wish there didn't have to be a bye at all, but I know it happens.

Once again, amazing work, zandl! I can't thank you enough for all the hard work you put into this. Seriously great job! Hopefully, your burden will be a little lightened with half the decks to play with now.

May 12, 2016 10:14 a.m.

CRKFIEND says... #19

Thanks taskking! Good games, although we never saw them happen! :)

... To Tsarius and anyone else giving zandl crap about misspelling of names, etc... get over it. The amount of work he has put into this for our viewing pleasure is amazing. Instead of crying about him abbreviating your name accidently, why don't you tell him thanks for running your deck in the Tournament?

zandl, thanks. The community really does appreciate the work you've put in, even though some people can be thankless brats.

May 12, 2016 12:20 p.m.

zandl says... #20

Well, I wouldn't go that far. At the end of the day, I'd probably be a bit miffed if my deck, which I spent so much thought and time on, wound up fizzling out. But still - you have to accept that variance plays a huge role in Magic even when we try to diminish it. If variance didn't exist, you'd see Brad Nelson and Owen Turtenwald winning every tournament they played in. They win often, but luck is built into the game.

May 12, 2016 12:27 p.m. Edited.

Ostrichman01 says... #21

Mortem, i absolutely love your deck! I playtested it and was beyond satisfied with the amount of zombies i accumulated. I hope you go far in the is tournament. :D

zandl you rock for striving for inclusiveness.

Also you are just awesome for running this challenge in the first place. It's one of the most fun things I've taken part in on TappedOut.

May 12, 2016 4:40 p.m.

zandl Love your commentating

brokendwarf Good game!

May 12, 2016 4:57 p.m.

legendofa says... #26

Crayfish Good luck going on! I'll be pulling for you.

Ah, well, I was afraid I was going to be short on removal. Needed fewer chumpy creatures and more proactive stuff. I'll put more time into my next deck. Thanks a lot, zandl!

May 12, 2016 5:37 p.m.

KUW says... #27

Well done to DruneGrey when I saw the pairing I guessed my vampires wouldn't keep up with that.

Thanks zandl it's obvious a huge amount of work that goes into all this (and then you do individual game write-ups too!). Are you at the point yet where you look at two decks and can pretty much guess the outcome?

May 12, 2016 6:19 p.m.

zandl says... #28

I try to stay as objective as possible, but seeing some lists all laid out gives me a pretty solid idea of how well it might do. I've been surprised plenty of times, though.

May 12, 2016 6:55 p.m.

tulse says... #29

Wow, I'm shocked, but delighted! When I saw ToolmasterOfBrainerd's list I was entirely sure I was going down. I didn't think it would be close. Sounds like I drew like a god with both Dampening Pulse in two games. I knew the card was good when I added the second, sounds like it should have been 3 or 4! Better lucky than good, as they say.

Thanks again for doing this, zandl. It's a blast. Looking forward to Round 2.

May 12, 2016 8:15 p.m.

Tsarius says... #30

CRKFIEND He didn't abbreviate my name accidentally. He literally never typed out my name. Considering that my opponent's name without the MTG prefix ALSO started with a T, it made for a very confusing write-up. Even more so when you consider that he also used "T" to refer to my opponent once.

I do appreciate that he put the effort into this tournament, and I've said it in two different comments already. That appreciation is not going to make me bite my tongue when something bothers me.

Tsarius, to me, sounds like a gentleman from foreign lands (or a vampire who's trying to hard, but that's beside the point). T sounds like the name of that gang member who shot up whatever street last week.

Have I made my issue clear enough for you, CRKFIEND?

note: I really need to stop logging time on tapped out after having a bad day.

May 13, 2016 2:06 a.m.

zandl says... #31

Bro. FYI, I used "T" because that's what I've called you in my head since this thing started, seeing as I don't know (nor do I now particularly care) how your name is pronounced. If you're mad because I called you "T" and your name starts with "T", then you were going to be mad for any other reason. Sure; I probably should've seen some potential confusion coming from the fact that your opponent's name could've also been construed as "T". But to have your jimmies rustled so?

Such salt.

Anyway, to the rest of you, thanks for your admiration and appreciation. I'm getting to work on Round 2 tomorrow.

May 13, 2016 2:51 a.m.

jellowsmurf says... #32

clayperce Well, that's the plan anyways! Lol. Good games, they sounded very close. When I playtested our decks the other day it was about split down the middle, so I knew this would be a nail-biter.

tempest Our decks seem to emulate the classical match-up of Zendikar vs Eldrazi, so as MTG canon dictates I get to win :P

jk, jk. Your deck looks pretty tough, you very well may have my number. We'll just have to wait and see. Good luck!

Shout out to zandl, I appreciate all the time you've put into this. This is a lot of fun, and I hope to participate in more events like this.

May 13, 2016 3:17 a.m.

@EludeMerlange Got em! That is a gross deck.

@ToolmasterOfBrainerd whelp. Hopefully better luck next time ,your list was sweet

May 13, 2016 9:45 a.m.

Crayfish says... #34

legendofa Thanks for the encouragement! Believe me, I was quite nervous about the results of the matches, since the decks seem pretty evenly matched! :)

May 13, 2016 10:32 a.m.

Argy says... #35

Dalektable's deck looks fierce. I think draw is going to play a big part in our matchup.

Hey zandl, I'm curious to know whether or not you take Mulligans when playing the decks off against each other.

Tried to work out in my brain whether this would be a fair thing to do or not, and my brain returned the result: flmrglthp

May 13, 2016 10:58 a.m.

zandl says... #36

Seeing as how variance plays a huge role in this format and most people's land bases are "X basics and X basics", flmrglthp happens frequently. Lots of mulligans take place, but I offer 1 free mulligan to each deck each game, with the 'Vancouver Scry'. While there may be some who don't like it, I see the freebie as essential. There are a lot of games that wouldn't even see a player cast a spell if it weren't for it, and nobody wants to read that their deck only had 1 land the whole game.

May 13, 2016 noon

Argy says... #37

Thanks for the feedback, zandl.

That sounds really smart and fair.

flmrglthp now resolved.

May 13, 2016 12:28 p.m.

zandl says... #38

(To clarify, the Vancouver Scry only occurs if a hand goes down to 6 cards - and not just after the freebie.)

May 13, 2016 12:31 p.m.

Good games ShikaSpectre! Sorry you got mana-screwed game 2, you had a great deck and it was about 50/50 in the games I played myself, keep up the great brewing!

May 13, 2016 1:18 p.m.

Tsarius says... #40

You don't have to pronounce it, you have to type it. I'm annoyed because I don't like nicknames to begin with. I have a very long history with them that I'm not going to go into here, but I'd appreciate it if you could stop fucking up my name.

For once I'm on tappedout when I wasn't initially pissed off, but holy crap your responses are god damn irritating.

May 13, 2016 2:41 p.m.

zandl says... #41

Sounds like you have some issues that get you really mad about things that shouldn't. You're sitting over there, legitimately irate that I called you "T".

If you're going to insult me and spit flames my way, maybe next time tell someone "OMG NO NICKNAMES" before it turns into "HOW DID YOU NOT KNOW I'M EMOTIONALLY FRAGILE AND GET MAD WHEN SOMEONE DOESNT CALL ME BY MY MADE-UP INTERNET NAME".

/you

May 13, 2016 2:48 p.m.

Tsarius says... #42

If you called me by the first letter of my name irl, I would ask you to stop. If you did it again, I would punch you in the face.

May 13, 2016 2:58 p.m.

zandl says... #43

Then you sound like a violent person with awful interpersonal skills and anger problems.

Don't worry; I won't be calling you "T" again, tough guy.

May 13, 2016 3:02 p.m. Edited.

Tsarius says... #44

I do have anger issues, my people skills are fine because I have a lot more self control offline, and I'm pretty sure I have some serious mental issues. Frankly, the name thing was a minor issue, but the flippant disrespect that stemmed from it was why I am...or was...as you said "legitimately irate".

Sorry for the derail and any insults you may have construed from my text.

May 13, 2016 3:23 p.m.

Dalektable says... #45

Argeaux Thanks man! I think this round will be my demise, your deck looks like it'll destroy UR Prowess haha. 16 "removal" (Reflector Mage included)) will be difficult to press through.

May 13, 2016 3:31 p.m.

Volvary says... #46

Hey Crayfish, good luck buddy. Whether you or I win, I will be rooting for the victor, since your deck looks so cool.

May 13, 2016 7 p.m.

tooTimid Your deck looks sweet, I've play tested a few times and all I can say is "fuck". Good luck!

May 13, 2016 10:39 p.m.

amerishin says... #48

Hey Zandl, Keep up the great work! This event has been fun and seeing the brews that others put together has been interesting. Makes me regret making my deck just straight aggro... To everyone else good luck in future rounds and great deckbuilding!

May 14, 2016 1:45 a.m.

Crayfish says... #49

Volvary Good luck to you too! Trust me, this matchup is going to be nerve-wracking for me. Werewolves were my second choice for the challenge, and I know not to underestimate their power. :P

I can't wait to see how this plays out! :D
