Thanks for your interest in my deck and for your suggestions, NV_1980, I am glad you liked it! These are indeed excellent cards that I also considered. However, since my deck revolves mostly on Angel-token generation, I found that creature recursion is not as useful as it would normally be. Plus, I am trying to keep the average CMC relatively low so that I can cast multiple spells per turn and trigger the lifegain engine (which in turns makes me the tokens), and recursion cards like these are usually quite expensive to cast. This said, Platinum Angel is definitely something I will consider, especially as an antidote to combo-decks and as a way to buy a few more turns and maybe scrap a win :)

Great tribal deck, orcopollo! I've got one myself and I love it. In terms of affordable Angels, I've been able to make some great use of cards like:

  • Adarkar Valkyrie: excellent recursion utility; especially since she can attack (because of vigilance) AND use her recursion in the same turn.
  • Admonition Angel/Angel of Serenity: great mid-game exile tools and powerful combatants as well.
  • Angelic Arbiter: give your opponents a choice; spells or combat (but not both!).
  • Platinum Angel: as long as it lives, games will end up in your favor (eventually).

Hope this helps; happy building (and playing)!

Fun Angel-tribal deck! I like how you've gone all in with this strategy :) I have some suggestions but I'm not sure how much you want to spend on this, so just let me know if I'm going over the top.

Let's start with your mana. Right now, you've got 31 lands and one ramp-artifact. This is really on the low side, consdering the average amount of mana you need to spend for most of your creatures. I'd really recommend some mana-rocks like Arcane Signet, Caged Sun, Gilded Lotus, Pearl Medallion and definitely Sol Ring. Some more ramp like Archaeomancer's Map, Land Tax and Weathered Wayfarer. Lastly, I know it's expensive, but if you can get a cheap Urza's Incubator somewhere, go for it; would be awesome in here. Any of these suggestions (and there are cheaper alternatives to most) would increase the speed of your deck.

Next, let's talk opportunities this deck offers to draw additional cards. You've got five options, of which three are repeatable (because they're permanents :)). Some additional ideas on this: Archivist of Oghma, Endless Atlas, Mind's Eye and Smuggler's Share. Like with the stuff mentioned for mana, all of these would increase your deck's pacing.

To strengthen your angelic forces, you could consider Adarkar Valkyrie (which is awesome at resurrecting any Angels you lost during combat or even better, an opponent's creature lost in battle!), Angelic Arbiter (cast or attack, your opponents must choose), Battle Angels of Tyr (expensive card but insanely powerful balance-bringers in case you're behind with card-draw, mana or life) and Platinum Angel (as long as it's got indestructible and hexproof, opponents will have a very hard time snatching victory from you).

In case you're looking for more ideas, here's my Angel tribal deck, enjoy!

Profet93 to answer your questions:

  1. Yeah the Main Combo isn't the primary win-con. That is of course attacking with powerful fliers. I have 4 win-cons in this deck: Simple attacks, Platinum Angel, Hellkite Tyrant and the Main Combo. It is hard to pull off but when I made this deck I saw a chance to try a sick combo and went for it
  2. I don't really understand what you mean here, sorry
  3. Not really looking for anything specific, but I always value different looks and many times people suggest nice cards. Personally I would add some form of reanimation, but I'm kinda low on card slots. Still, I would love to read some suggestions if you have them

irmsilver on Bloodletter of Aclazotz vs. Paying …

Thank you for your answer. I believe my confusion came from not from mentally separating the paying of life and then the actual losing of life.

So alternatively, this means that (during my turn) if my opponent has 4 life and controls Platinum Angel, they could still cast Dismember targeting my Bloodletter of Aclazotz by announcing their casting it for {1} and 4 life. But then Bloodletter sees that they would lose 4 life from paying 4 life, and changes that loss to 8. They wouldn't actually be paying more life than they have, but would still actually go to a -4 life total.

Profet93 the devil is in the details as they say and magic is no exception.

As of now I have only used Peer into the Abyss on myself, though the dream is there to combo with bowmasters. Orcish Bowmasters has been a great include as it provides consistent board presence (which is extremely effective offensivly and defensively) and incremental damage throughout the game. In similar ways Ophiomancer functions in a similar role.

As for the removal of Platinum Angel, it happened to me recently and it was honestly a pretty fun moment with my buddies. When it happened, I did have an alternate path for Phage but did not choose to go that way. Reflecting on the game made me recognize the fragility of Platinum Angel and the importance of knowing your opponent's deck and board state. This leads to one of the things I love about the deck, the precision in timing needed for so many pieces of the deck.

I find that having multiple effects like Soul Conduit are helpful with consistency with so many life as a resource effects in the deck. I find people will often counter the flashy spell Profane Transfusion but would let Soul Conduit resolve knkwing it's mana investment. Additionally the benefit of repeatable use and the ability to exchange two opponent's life total has shown itself to be quite useful at times.

Whoa thank you Profet93!

Yep, Remand is an upgrade of Miscast and better than Turn Aside which I had also tested in that spot.

Treasure Mage is my failsafe to find Planar Bridge if a win condition can't be found otherwise and my get out of jail card Platinum Angel which is a budget version of Darksteel Forge. Sometimes my group targets me heavily so this is likely a utility slot for other players. Would you drop all three for another plan?

I appreciate your ideas!

In the combat phase there are a few steps:

  • Entering Combat
  • Declare Attackers
  • Declare Blockers
  • Before Damage
  • After Damage
  • Ending Combat

During each of these steps you have a chance to respond. (In fact, everyone in the commander group has a chance to respond.) Your opponent does not hold priority during each of these steps. Since you made them lose 2 life from Elderfang Venom before damage, they died from the state base action for being at zero or a negative life total. (Unless they had a card like Platinum Angel on the battlefield.) The combat damage is not delt.

In the future, it is very important to understand the steps of combat. For example, if you're opponent controls cards such as: Aurelia, the Warleader, Kaalia of the Vast, or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre you have to destroy or exile them before attackers are declared. (Earlier in their turn or on the Entering Combat phase.) Otherwise their normal on attack triggers occur.
