With Lost Caverns of Ixalan right around the corner, WotC is giving screen time to more LGBTQIA2S+ characters. This is great! Now we finally have enough to build a commander deck.

What sort of deck even is this?

It's a legendary matters deck, with a superfriends theme and a bit of grouphug. I wanted to do something special to thank WotC for the gay representation in Lost Caverns, so, with a few notable exceptions, every creature and planeswalker in the deck is canonically gay, trans, nonbinary, or gender-nonconforming in some other way. I tried to run as many on-theme cards of other types as well, like Open the Way. Unfortunately, there aren't any canonically LGBTQIA2S+ commanders in , so we have to settle for Jodah.

Speaking of which, what does Jodah do here?

Jodah gives all of our legendary spells legendary cascade. Since all named characters are legendary, and we're running pretty much all named characters, that seems pretty deece. Originally I ran General Tazri as my commander for the sole purpose of making an Allies pun, but Jodah's synergy with the deck, and the possibility of Chandra cascading into Nissa (or the inverse) was just too good to pass up.

So, what characters are represented in this deck?

Alesha, Who Smiles at Death was magic's first transgender character from way back in the Tarkir block. Chandra and Nissa were magic's first major characters to be in a lesbian relationship. Huatli and Saheeli are also important in bringing representation to Magic, as are Ral Zarek and Tomik, Wielder of Law, and Halana and Alena, Partners. So are Kynaios and Tiro of Meletis, released for Commander 2016. Adeline, Resplendent Cathar is a bi character worthy of note, and Ashiok brings a bit of Nonbinary/Agender representation.

How does the deck win?

After ramping, setting up Jodah, and getting some value, you'll find yourself in the endgame, needing a way to win. The deck runs the standard-terrorizing combo of Felidar Guardian + Saheeli Rai from Saheeli's first printing. All Will Be One does some pretty neat things, Chandra, Torch of Defiance has a great emblem, and Spark Rupture can turn our harmless 'walkers into an army of creatures which get buffed by Jodah.

Updates Add

With Tomik, Wielder of Law doing work, I've decided to cut the other Tomik (Tomik, Distinguished Advokist) for Niko Aris. For those who don't know, Niko Aris is nonbinary.
